THURSDAY, MAY 11, 1905 A Business League. In most wideawake towns much JHSk . has been done to promote material development and commercial expansion by the forming of "business leagues," whose province is, in geno??ol tr? ailvprtisp to the world the peculiar advantages of the community that they represent, and to ' work together harmoniously and m.telligently to encourage the estab lishment of industrial enterprises .both by home and "foreign" capital. By studviug the conditions of their town and county such a body of men would be prepared to furnish off-hand and in detail such infovmtiOn as business men with capital would naturally want before serious y en. tertaining the idea of investing their money in a community unknown to them. In many instances these organizations take the nam* of "young men's business leagues," but the matter of name is of small A ntr Ana oVimiltfl lua I UUiiOOj UCUUC. JX11J UUU OIIVHIX4 W eligible who earnestly desires to piomote the growth and welfare of the town. Already Kingstree is stretching itself, as though awakening from a long, lethargic slumber, and the signs everywhere indicate its upbuilding and material advancement. The term, "full grown town."! which has been jeeringly applied to this municipality, is already a mis- i nomer,of which fact evidence isvisi- j ble on every hand. L has also been : r " -l ! said that nature mis done everything! .for Kingstree and that scarcely anything else has been doue. However true such an observation might have been in the past, times have chanced and there is now in the' very atmosphere the breath of prog- , ress. Already we have much here to attract new-comers, if it were but known to outsiders. It is the work of the business league to exploit the advantages and resources that the town enjoys. The time is ripe for such an organization and we hope to see our business men so interested that it may soon take tangible form. We leave the subject open and invite discussion from anyone who is interested in this most important matter. FOOOTH One disease of thinness in j children is scrofula; in adults, consumption. At their annual meeting receutly a satisfactory dividend was declared and all the old officers were re-elected for the ensuing year. Having obtained a firm foothold here their prospects are bright for a permanent and successful future. We refer to this company as an "infant" enteiprise, but as a matter of fact it lias grown in one year to be a large business concern, occupying two good sized stores and a ware-house. A representative of Thk County Record dropped in yesterday to secure an order for job work (for they have all their I job printing done at Thk Record | office and are also liberal advertisers), and it is really surprsiug to note the large quantities of roer- a chandise they buy direct from the manufacturers. Our representative was shown a solid car-load of wire they have just received and invoices for a car-load of stoves now en route, and also four car-loads of other goods?lime, cement and piping?nukiug, all told, six solid carloads of merchandise on hand and in transit. J Truly this speaks well for a comparatively new Kingstree enterprise. | sriMNTflN PFRMNm uvnnivivti t biivvimuvi People Coming and Going and Others Who Tarry.
