THURSDAY, APR'L 13. 1905 * For once it seems that the wily Jap has been caught "a- jj sleep at the switch" when s Rojestvensky slipped through t the straights of Malacca and gave Togo the meiry ha-ha. Our accomplished and versatile president seems to ha ?e en- ( iv i i i.j vi : ( urexy suojugaxeu xne sovereign State of Texas. Wonder what ^ will become of that hundred I thousand Democratic majority at the next presidential elec- s tion? ^ - c< Doubtless the "yeggmen" are v beginning to realize that the b road of the transgressor is more \\ or less a rocky one. Three of p, these gentry have been convicted in the United States C( court, now in session in Charles- m v ton, for being concerned in the a.' Latta postoflice robbery, and <r the same defendants are yet to tl be tried for 4 robbing the post- in office at Kingstree. ===== ta Merchants, farmers and rep- ^ reeentative men generally from p( different sections of the county, sj with whom we have discussed f0 the subject this week, express ^ the opinion that considerably ca less fertilizer than usual is be- pj ing used on cotton this season. ^ This is an encouraging indica- cf tion that in Williamsburg coun- sj ty, at least, the cotton acreage ^1 is really being reduced. ^ ci Florence is to have another ^ daily newspaper, "The Evening g. News." The corporators an- Sl] nounce the capital stock as $3000, p. the most of which has been subscribed. This amount will, purchase a pretty fair outfit for fa a small daily, out the stock- j holders should subscribe at least p< ? another $3,000 to pay running ^ expenses until the paper gets on a a paying basis, if it should erer do so. I The fact that the fertilizer I receipts in South Carolina up to April 1, 1905, are greater than they were the same time last year, as has been going the rounds of the State press, is accounted for by the statement that a great deal of these fertilizers will not be applied to cotton, and hence this evidtnce is not conclusive that the cot* ton acreage will be increased. More truck and tobacco than usual has been planted this year and a large proportion of fertilizers sold in this State will be used on this crop. It is devoutly to be ^ hoped that this explanation is correct, as another large cotton crop means disaster to the I farmers. re< ===== th Ware Houses for Storing to Cotton. 0 re In a recent issue of The Re/ cord appeared a communica/ tion fromJMr W D Bryan, of Taft,1 w< , suggesting the building of wareI houses in order that the fanners 1 enabled rice offered them falls below reasonable profit, and draw loney on it to meet their presslg necessities. This is a very imely suggestion on the part f our friend, who is himself ne of the largest cotton growrs of the county, and the plan e offers to build these ware louses by means ot joint stock ompanies seems to be feasible. A ware-house in Kin^stree, >r any other town in the couny, would undoubtedly be of Teat benefit to the town in a naterial way, and the nu*rhants and other business men fould find it to their interest to ncouratje such an enterprise' >v subscribing to the stock. If I he stock holders nev? : recei ved | cent in the way of dividends, he money spent in building the L'are-honses would be well in ested, for every farmer Vlio tored cotton and hypothecawl is storage certtiicate would I pend the most of tlie money hus obtained in the town that elped to build the ware house. ' In prompt response to Mr ' tryan's suggestion, Mr J Davis 1 arter, president of the county , < otton Growers' Association, ho is always wide-awake to ^ he interests of the organization las appointed a committee, conistingof six representative men " rom various sections of the ' :>unty "to investigate the adisabilitv and probable cost of , uilding cotton ware-houses in 'illiamsburg count}' and rer?rt tr? the ronventinn later " We hope that the gentlemen jmprising this committee will eet and consider the sub ject 5 soon as practicable, so as to ive the public the benefit of leir views, after making proper vestigation. By reducing acreage and esiblishing these ware-houses le farmers have it in their )wer to become masters of the tuation. Instead of being irced to take any price offered iem for their product they in, to a certain extent, fix the n rice themselves. On the other { md, if they do not intend to ^ and together, and any conderable proportion through C ind selfishness refuses to relce their crop, then the asso- . ation would better disband,so 11 lat every man will be on the p ime footing and no one will [ iffer through bad faith on the v -i ; _1_ , iri 01 ms neignour. If nothing- but five-cent cot- c m will convince the Southern f\ rmer of the futility of his a plant-the-earth" policy, then srhaps the sooner it comes to ^ iat the better it will be for the ^untry generally. j We Trust Doctors $ ???
