THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY Convened in Columbia on Tuesday, January 10. The general assembly of South Carolina convened in Columbia Tuesday January 10. In the house of representatives Hon M L Smith of Kershaw was elected speaker and Col Tom C Hamer .of Marlboro clerk without opposition. The other attaches were elected as follows: Sergeant-at-arms, Mr J S Wilson of Lancaster; reading clerk, Mr J S Withers of Chester; chaplain, Rev R N Pratt of Columbia. After this election and the assignment of seats the house adjourned. News reached here yesterday afternoon of the death of Mrs Belle Fulton at the Manning infirmary, which occurred Wednesday morning". Mrs Fulton was the wife of Mr Benjamin 1' Fulton, who lives near Foreston,and had recently gone to the infirmary. Her death we understand, was the result of a surgical operation. Mrs Susan A Ross, 'the aged mother of Mr M A Ross, died at the latter's home in Mill street! yesterday morning at nine a'clock. She had been infirm in ht^Lhfor several years, but] Ihe sue- j cum bed lasted o^^^M^ays. j Mrs Ross was born land county, s. Septembe^ 17, 1H34, and was therefore a lity | tie more than seventy years old. * Her husband died about twenty- j live years ago and since then j her home has been here with her : >on. She is survived by four! children, two sons' and two daughters; viz: Messrs M A Ross and George Ross and Miss Essie Ross and Mrs Alice Carter of Salters Depot. Nearly Five Hundred Shares of Stock Already Taken -Board of Directors and Officers Elected. An enterprise from which the most gratifying" results are confidently expected, and one of the mast promising institutions ever organized with a view to promoting the material advance ment of Kingstree is the building and loan association, which sprang into existence last Tuesday.
