Late corn and cotton are almost a complete failure. ? There were six or eight tombstone men here Thursday making bids for the contract to erect a monument to the late Rev J E Dunlop who was pastor of Union Presbyterian church for several years. The contract was awarded to Mr Walker of Charleston, who was the lowest bidder. * Mr A L Collette has sold his place between Sal ters and La nes to Mr Wm Britton of Lanes, S. Mr Collette will move to r* Georgia in a week or ten days, where he will make his future . home. A R Moseley, special agent of ihe census, will s^art out on October 18th to make his second Jf visit to the cotton ginneries of Williamsburg county. He will make a report every month during the cotton season. Georgetown county has been taken out of his territory this season,as the time for making these reports has been cut down to six days. Mr J W Whitfield, who is now with the Atlantic Coast Lumber Corp., spent Sunday at home. Mr CL Porter, train master of the A. ('. L. of S. C., was here Saturday for a short while. Dr W V Brockiaton of Kingstree was here Saturday afternoon. Mrs J B Weldon is still quite ,sick. r f Albert R Moseley, hearing something disturbing his chickens several nights ago, went out to investigate and found a large horned owl in one of the coops. He has him now on exhibition. Little Cecil, son of the Rev J B Weldon, is quite sick with fever. M rs David and Mrs Hamer of Marlboro are visiting Mrs J C Everett. X. I Mr P H Pierce's livery stables jare almost completed and he ' will be ready for business in a ! Hari This enterprise is one that has been needed at j Cades for some time. Heretofore people have been put to a great deal of inconvenience about getting- a conveyance out to other points from here, and it will certainiy.supply a long felt want. Mr Pierce is orignally from Darlington county and is a hustler, and there is no reason why he should not be success ful with a business of this kind. He will sell stock or trade and do a general livery business. Cotton is coming in lively. Both gins, that of Hartsville and Sauls Bros., are running on full time, and then there is cotton left over after knocking off time at night. We need another gin here the worst sort. Good times seem to be prevailing just now with the farmers around here. They are paying their debts and have something left over. A good many will take in the State fair to meet their farmer friends and confer about the State farmers' | association. This movement has aroused much atteution with ttie soil tillers throughout this section and it realy looks as if something will be done. We only hope that this effort on the part of the farming class will not fall through as has been the case heretofore. Mrs J N Coker died Saturday night about 12 o'clock at her home a few miles from town. She had been sick for some time with complicated trouble and gradually grew worse. She was about 55 years old and leaves a husband and several children and relatives bereaved. Mr Parson, one of Mr C G Carsten's faithful employees, died here last night after a lingering illness of typhoid fever.
