ENDORSED BY HIS COUNTY. W. Boyd Evans the Favorite of the Deuecracy of Marion. The Marion county Democratic Vjconvmitioi2 adopted the following resolution unanimously: k. Prices realized seem fair, although not so good as last season, and the farmers already have made some clear cash. We have been blessed with fine rains recently so that the farmers have relaxed their severe facial expression. The town is ahead to the tune of several fines contributed by violators of ordinances within the last week. Arthur, the little son of Mr E J Smith, has been very sick for the past few days. Mrs W B Gregg of Florence spent a few days of last week with relatives ntar town. Miss Mabel Buzhardt has resigned her position as book-keeper for Mr G L Sauls. Miss Mittie McGill has returned from Florence, where she has been attending the graded school. I regret to report that, at this writing, our fellow-townsman, Mr W E Nesnnth is very sick. 1 understand that a gay and festive old bachelor of this community has entered the race as a candidate for the office of benedict. The examination for the award of vacant scholarships in Winthrop College and for the admission of new students will be held at the County Court House ou Friday, July 8th, at 9 a. m Applicauts must not be less than fifteen years of age. When scholarships are vacated after July 8, they will be awarded to those making the highest average at this examination. Scholarships are worth $100 and free tuition. ALONG THE MAIL ROUTE. Crops Revived by Recent Rain:;? Pernicious Practice of Plowing up Roads. ScRantoN, June 6:?On last Tuesday a refreshing rain came all along the route and the crops are greatly benefited thereby. On the following day every one wore a cheerful smile; even the birds were chanting sweet songs us of praise and all nature seemed to rejoice. Cotton has grown more since the rain than theretofore since planting and all other crops are doing well. Mr Robinson, a postoffice inspector, went with the carrier from Scranton to Johnson*ille last Saturday and on to Smith's Mills to investigate some irregularities concerning the arrival of certain newspapers that had been reported to the department. -On June 1 Willie G Graham of Single killed an eagle that measured 7 feet and li inches fiom "tip to tip", 21 feet high and 71 inches from thepdirtt of back claw to the nail of longest front claw. Pretty good inarkmanship for a boy. I wish to ask the road officials if it is not a violation of law to throw the dirt from a ditch cut alongside the public road so as to obstruct the highway. There are some places along the mail ronte where so much dirt has beeu thrown and left' without even being leveled that traveling is attended with extreme difficulty and when two vehicles meet it is almost impossible to pass. One place in particular that- needs attention is where new ground has been ploughed up in beds with the ends of the beds extended to within three or four feet of the centre of the road. Such doiDgs as these are an imposition on the public and shonlo. be looked afcer by those in authority. Oats are being harvested. As a rule they are fairly good, although the grain is not well matured by reason of the dry weather. Tobacco looks well, where there is a staud.
