Johnsonvilj.e, May 28:?With the "dose of the first session Prof S H Brown and Miss Cora Hugging, by their faithful and untiring zeal in advancing 160 students of the Venters Graded school, have placed the patrons under heavy'tribute of commendation. The school was fortunate, through the good offices of Rev W M Harden^ in securing Rev Henry Cauthen of Kingstree to preach the commencement sermon Suuday morning, May 22. Au overflowing congregation was present and many had to forego the refreshing enjovineut afforded by a theme so full of "new thought"?I had like to have said?of this 20th century. Jest as the school was seated in reserved seats in frout of the cliannVijintpd "Worthy A the Lamb," Mrs S B Postou offici^-j ing as organist. The effect was a suitable prelude for the hush that prevailed throughout the fascinating sermon as it held the audience spellbound to the last. Mr Cauthen is a born orator and, withal, a thoughtful 6tudent. It will be a long time be-s fore these lessous of thought force will fade from the miuds of the scholars aud others present. Some one has said, "Thoughts are things and things are thoughts," and that, | "Our thoughts are shaping unmade! spheres, And like a blessing or a cnrse, They thunder down the formless years At;d ring throughout the universe." /11 was not present at the exhibition .^j^ereises at the school house on the evening of the 24th from 8 to 11 p. The programme opened with "the May Queen Festival," followed by , "In the Absence of the Teacher," "Motion Song, We'll Stand up To? gether," "Rival Speakers," "New Scholars," "Calisthenics Ring Drill," t "Examination jf Teachers," "Minstrels," "What Would X Be?" and a number of others, all of which wero highy entertaining throughout. Our congressman, Hon R B Scar- j borough, who kindly cousented to de- j liver the literary address, arrived , promptly at 4 m., Wednesday, j May 25, to find an audience too 1 large for the chifich. When the 4 school was seated a solo, "The Half * Has Never Been Told," beautifully j rendered by Mrs W C Hemingway, f with Mrs R B Woodbury at the or- | gau 4nd the choir to swell the chor- t us, charmed to silence the expectant J assembly. After prayer by Rev Mr 1 Wade, Hon R B Scarborough was in- ' tr-odneed by our pastor, Rev W M ' . Hardeu,in a style commeusurate with the importance of the honorable speaker, who when lie began rose superior to it all, saying, "I do myself honor iu addressiug this thoughtful assembly on the momentous question miud training." Then taking c up the refrain of the solo, "The Half 1 Has Never Been Told," he magm- j tied it with the possibilities of mind culture here carried on to fruition 2 with the 60ul power iu the elysium of paradise beyond, and added. "We are what we make ourselves here as as well as hereafter." He told of the 1 great philosopher Socrates saving e that the ditlerence between him and I other people was that "they did not J know, and did not know they did not } know; while he did not know, but ] did know that he did nut know;" and c so today the trouble is "we do nut know and do nut know we do not know." He said that God made matter and fore-ordained certain fixed constitutional laws for its behavior, Sun, moon and stars obey the laws because , they cannot do otherwise. So does every particle of matter and every drop of water exactly the same under simular conditions. But God had a consultation when about to make man. '-Let ! us make man in Our image"?the last and grandest work of the Holy j Trinity. And so near to God did j He make man that He gave him a' free will and certain advisory laws; to work out his own destiny and be' awarded here as w dl as in his newer sphere. You are what you make yourself to be. Parents, do you stand in the way or do you assist this mind training?" After the address I asked Mr Dennis, who is hard of hearing, if he could hear it. "Yes," he repled, "ev^ry word of it, and I feel my self importance more than ever before". These are only a few of the thoughts he so widely presented, taken at random.
