I . SEEN AT SMITHS. Lo:alItem; of Interest of Recent Occurrence Noted. Smiths, Mav 2:?Mr James Mcv Clary, from near Kingstree, visited tv relatives in this community Sunday. Cotton planting is keeping our IT farmers busy. I notice corresponP dents from certain sections lvport an iucnastd acreage of the ''fleecy staple", but am glad to say that no such conditious obtain around here. i If anything, the cotton acreage will De uimimsneu tins year ana more attention given to truck and tobacco and other money crops. If the farmers were assured of getting 14 or 15 cents a pound for their cotton they might well afford to plant the earth in cotton, but take cure lest the prevailing high price be but a bait to hire the f .rmers to over production so as to play into the bands of speculators, thus repe.-.ting the exrerience of tobacco growers last year. It would be well to give pause and consider this (piestioa before rushing headlong into planting so much cotton that it must result in over production, and I hope that y these reports of so much cotton being pluuted are exaggeiafire of tlnthe true condition. It may that a lot of fertilizer is being used, but * this to be applied to other crops besides cotton. The devil always has someone toj work for him, it seems, and often j for very small wages. The other J night Mr Bingle Coker and his brother, X J Coker, went fishing at! point on Black river called the "black hole". They left their cart under a shelter in a field near the river swamp. Fortunately they took the horse with them to the lauding. Wheu they came out about 1 o'clock i at night aud started home one of the cart wheels gave way and both the occupants were thrown from the cart and severely hurt. It will be j remembeied that Mr Bingle Coker j got his right arm cut by a gin saw j some time ago so badly that it had to be amputated and the wound was! not fully healed. He fell on that side and hurt his arm again, causing ' him much, pain and suffering. If the tap were removed from the axle | as a practical joke it was a thought- i less and dangerous prank, while if ; the act were malicious it was a mean, | cowardly persou that would stoop to ; so low and treuchei ous a method of revenge. Messrs William M Smith and J Y McGill, Jr, attended preaching at Moore's X Roads Sunday afternoon. { Miss Eloise Kinder, accompanied by Mr C S Woodrow, spent Saturday aud Sunday with friends and relatives at Lncile, in Florence county.
