Mr and Mrs B B Chandler of Rome, spent Sunday with their laughter, M;s J 0 Caroway of Scranton. John P Confer, of the Flo.ence Daily Times, was in town a few days igo in the interest of his paper. Agent D P Spell is now occupying the Weatherford cottage near the de- j pot. The weather is unseasonably warm jnd as a consequence coughs and ?olda are very prevalent. There is a good crop of partridges this season and the local sportsmen ire enjoying some fine shooting. Mr S L McKnight, who was called borne from Jacksonville on account )f the illness of his father, will return to his post of duty this week. There seems to be some difficulty in securing a satisfactory teacher. Mrs R Mac Cooper is teaching i private school at her residence and has a goodly number of pupils on the roll. At the last meeting of Scranton Lodg? Kuight9 of Pythias it was ajreed to have a supper at,the first reg ular convention in December, that being the time for the annual election >f officers. The many friends of Mr R E McKuight will learn with pleasure that be is rapidly recovering from a severe ittack of pneumonia. Miss Ray Coker of Society Hill, ind Miss Hannah Byrd of Howes, visited Scranton last Friday. Miss Kate Johnson of Sardis, is visiting the family of her uncle, Capt E S Johnson. Miss Walpole, the trained nurse ivho was waiting on Mr R E Mc- \ Knight, was called to Charleston last Thursday morning by a telegram mnouucing the critical illness of one jf her very dear friends. Dr Lynch was thrown from his buggy a few days ago and quite painfully hurt. Sheriff Graham was in town a few lays ago and while here came upon i ginger-cake colored man at the passeDger station who closely resembled a negro for whom he was looking. The negro had a double-barrel shot gun and said he was on his way to Wilmington, X. C. The Sheiiff, lecided he was a suspicious character and took him in charge. On making a search he found a razor ind a pair of brass knucks in the negro's pockets, so he took him before Intendant Singletary. The negro plead guilty to the charge preferred igainst him and was fined $25 or 30 iays on the chaingang. He paid the fine and departed. He gave his name as Louis Mar tip, and said he was raised in theMcElveen neighborhood of this county. Until lately, however, he had been working on the turpentine farm in Florida. Capt E S Johnson spent Saturday in Florence on business. Mr W H Edwards of Kingstree, *as in town Saturday in the interest >f the County Record. His many Tiends were glad to see him. The mercantile business hereto:ore conducted by 0 B Carter has nerged into the firm of Carter & Stephens, the senior partner being drO B Carter, the former proprieor, and the junior member of the irm is Mr J H Stevens.
