Qvermarketing the Cotton
' < Crop.
It is evident that raisers of cotton
. in some 'sections are rushing their
crops to market as rapidly as possible
and from Texas comes the statement
that the railways are being hustled to
j$ hurry consignments to port
In the light of the practical certainty
that the yield of the crop will fall
largely below the estimates ef a few
weeks ago and tnat tne supply w meet
the sure spinning and export demands
will not be adequate., it seems unbusinesslike
for any cotton raiser to rush
his crop to market in such haste, if
he is able at all to hold it, or a part
of it? in his own control.
Present prices at points of delivery
may be tempting. There is a natural
dread on the part of producers that
prices will fall. The pessimism of the
' class is proverbial. But conditions
ought not to be ignored and the status
of visible supply to calculable demand |
is such even now as to give every
promise that prices will advance rath
er than decline whenever the approximate
crop is known.
The Constitution believes that it is
not wise for any farmer to sell cotton
now that his actual necessities do not
compel him to part with. Every pound
of cotton will be needed and will be
bought later on at prices the fanners
who own it will make; and not the j

The white-livered son of a sea
cook that came into onr office on the
SOth day of March, 1902, and subscribed
for the paper, voluutarily,
promising to pay a quarter of a dollar
within a few weeks and the remainder
in the fall, hasn't had his
face in our sanctum since. Every
time we see him on the streets he
looks as if he had stolen the birthright
of a pole cat or swiped the
coppers off of a dead nigger's eyes.
We are not kicking because he owes
us a dollar, but because he has lied
about it. We have but three or four
such "cheap skates" on our subscription
books and we want to get
. rid of them forever, but before we
mark them off we want them to read
in cold' type our opinion of them.

In looking so assidiouslv I have
no doubt but our friend Daniel
saw the late comet but failed to
recognize it because the tail was
scarcely visible to the naked eye;
for it was visible without a telescope,
and described as a dim stai,
and known to be a comet by its
movement fiom day to day among i
the stars. I did not recognize it,
but others told me thev saw it ;
after having it pointed out to |
them. Bui I saw it by faith in
in the reports. I know astronoaners
fail lo agree wilh me in
to-to on the office of comets as
scavengers of creation, bringing
in sun fuel. But I liev come all
'round it?much closer than our
friend Daniel, tor they themselves
own up that that the sun is partly
fed by meteors.
Comets and meteors are intimately
connected. Some claim
that meteors are disintegrated
comets, and are so abundant that
even in the earth's path millions
of thein strike our atmosphere

Large meteors often pass through
and strike the earth. Thev are

Hundreds of little worlds have

orbits of Mars and Jupiter, too
little to be seen by the naked eye, j

them strike our bomb-proof atmosphere
and look like shooting
stars.
In the fairest day there is water;
enough in the atmosphere to'
make a river, but unseen because
the particles of vapor are too

of them never seen perhaps?and !
for a purpose! What else out sun

sportsmen, went gunning one day
last week and succeeded in bagging
four wild turkeys. Pretty
good lor John.
Mr J E McFadden has purchased
the property formerly
owned by Mr J N Sauls and will
reside there another yur. He
will plant truck mostly on the
place here, and on his place a
few miles Iroin Cades he will run
his usual farm.
Miss Ruth Roof is visiting
friends and relatives litis week at
her old home at Leesville.
News reached here Saturday
morning tiiat Mr J P Wheeler
had been shot and fatally
wounded at Rosemary, on the
Georgetown railroad, but we aie
glal to state that later reports
showed I lie mailer differently.
Ue had been shot but not seriously.
As to how the shooting
occurred we are unable to say.

was here Sunday, the guest of Mr
