The Atlantic Coast Line railroad offers cheap rates to Columbia to the State Fair October 24-29, and to Augusta, Ga., November 9 and 10 on account of the Confederate Veterans' Runion. Mr J S Brunson has resigned his position as superintendent of the chain-gang. Mr W W Lynch, the guard, is filling the place temporarily until the board elects Mr Bruwson's successor. At a called meeting of the board of county commissioners last Monday Mr General W Johnson's bond for 120,000 as county treasurer was examined and approved and it is expected that he will be inducted into office on the first Monday in October. Mr John W Marshall of Trio, who has been taking The Record since it was started nearly twenty years ago, paid us a pleasant call Mo iday.! Mr Marshall says he has become so used to The Record's weekly visits that when be misses an issue it's like being deprived of his tobacco. R K Wallace, Esq., has resigned as magistrate for Kingstree and his resignation has been accepted by the Governor. The Legislative delegation met yesterday and recommended R H Stoil, Esq., as Mr Wallace's successor. Wo are authorized to say that Mr Stoll will decline the appointment. Mr James Henry Rice, Jr., of Oonway was in town several day* this week. He will soon embark in the newspaper business at Conway and the name of his sheet will be "The Field." Mr James C Dobbin of Hoboken N. J., came here Tuesday on the sad mission of accompanying to their last resting, place the remains of his brother-in- j law, Rev Henry G Gilland, wh > died last Friday in the Adirondack mountains, New York. Mr Dobbin pow holds the responsible and lucrative position of district manager of the Mutual Reserve Insurance Co. of New York. He returned to his home yesterday. An informal dance, the first of the coming season, was given at nt the Coleman hotel Friday evening of last week by the young men who belong to the Social club, and iudirinir from the pleasure af forded by this, the first dance of the winter, our town will be very attractive to all the young people of this and neighboring towns when the season is well advanced. She left h?re ahead of the opening of the school and stopped over in Florence with her aunt, Mrs Shipp. The senator and representatives have been notified of the resignation of Mr R K Wallace as magistrate at Kingstree. Mr Wallace is out of the State and it is said will not return. He made a good officer and his resignation is regretted. Mr Clarence D Rollins last Saturday returned to Baltimore to continue his course is the Medical College of that city. Miss Annie Butcliffe is at home fiom an extended visit in Columbia and Florence. Miss Eleida Sutcliffe resumed the teacher's desk at Matthews school last Monday. She is so popular and successful as a teacher that they hold oil to her year after year. Mr J L Stuckey has sold his house and lot on Main Street to Mr J (J McElveen, of Spring Bank, and has purchased the new residence of Mr J II V Gaskins on Valley Street. Mr Gaskins is uncertain as to his future. If he can secure a desirable lot he will build another dwelling for himself; if not, he says lie will remove to some other town. We would be very sorry to lose him and his family. He is one of our best and most law-abiding citizens, and as an officer has few equals in the State. He is just the kind of a man we need as iuteudant. There is an element?gamblers, b^nd-tiger keepers and their sympathizes and others of that ilk?that would be glad to be rid of him, but the good people would regret to see him go.
