CADES KALEIDOSCOPE. Picnic at Mr. McGiU's and Other So' ciai Diversions?Personal Notes. Mr ft J McKnight is somewhat indisposed at this writing. Mr and Mrs W B Gregg returned to their home in Florence Friday alter spending some time with relatives near here. Th? farmers i?eieabouts will soon have concluded with (heir tobacco curing. 1 notice that Capt A J Smith has commenced fodder-pulling. He has an excellent crop which is well advanced. Mr \V P McGill has accepted a position with the King Tobacco Wirohouse of Lake City as Irav- , eling solicitor. This warehouse , is fortunate in securing his services, as he is a man of broad ex- ^ pericnce in such business. Mr Ed Carsten's storehouse has been completed. It is built , on modern plans and will present j a handsome appearance when the j painter's brush has been applied. Mr S B AlcGill now of Jackson- j vilie, Fla., spent Saturday and | Jr Sunday with his parent*, Mr and ' Mis W P McGill near town. Mr and Mrs W E Xesmith are j visiting Mrs Nesmith's parents in i Marion. Miss Anna Gregg returned Fri- * day to her home at Claussens, 1 alter spending some lime with , friends and relatives near this place. Mr M D Xesmith came up I from Dock one uay last week and spent the day with his friends llACO Alt; a SJ* Constable W B Rowel I of Flor- " cnee, the writer is informed, has ' attempted to suppress the sale of ' cider among some of the merchants here. * i It was the writer's pleasure to visit the Moore's X Beads section recently. Miss Larena Moore gave j a very etijoyable social entertainment at the home ot her parents, { Mr and Mrs John Moore, oti Fri- : day night ot week before last. On last Friday evening in the same neighborhood another similar , pleasant affair was given bv Misaes Ella and Mallie Maoru. Bath , ^ '"these functions were attended by , a number of people from here, in- . eluding the writer, and we all hud . a most delightful time on both occasion*. , \ ' I rpcret to renort the death of j ? - - r Miss Sal lie Scott, which occurred i last Wednesday. She had been < in declining health several years I and her demise was not unexpected. Her remains were laid ] to rest on Thursday at I he I Graham burying ground. The I only surviving relative of the de- I ceased is Mr William Scott, who is in the employ of Mr G L Sauls 1 at this place, J The picnic given at the home ( of Mr W P McGiil Thursday was n most nleasant and successful ( event, notwithstanding the in- > tense heat and the heavy down ' pour of rain during part of th? i day. A large erowd was present, 5 including old, middle-aged and a large proportion of youth and 1 beauty. The crove that fronts 1 Mr McGill's dwelling is studded ' with large, majestic oaks, making ' it an ideal place for a picnic. Mr 1 and Mrs McGill's hospitality to the visitors was unbounded. It ' was their constant aim to see that 1 every one had a good lime and ' that no one went away hungry. ! The repast provided was rich and 1 varied and bountiful. Cold lem- 1 onade was plentiful and every 1 one that thirsted drank to his hi] without money and without price. 1 , Linner over the young folk whiled away the afternoon with the conventional social diversions so pleasing to youthful fancy. Social games were iudulged in by many, and others sought solitude a deux in convenient baggies, where they were not heard for their much speaking. As the &?y was unusually warm some ol L I the guests lingered until the sun ! was seen dipping into a n aofgold and crimson in the western horizon. When the time came lor parting none went without an expression ot sincere thanks to the host and hostess lor a day of gennine pleasure. Ivaxiiok. LINES FROM LANES. C (Written for last week.) (Special): Your correslondeni does not remember ?v?r; laving seen the farmers of lower ( Williamsburg more busily en- ? (aged than at present. Instead 1 ?f making cotton, their once noney crop, the farmers are now Motivating tobacco, which is jeing prepared tor the market. The greatest trouble in successtil tobacco growing and marketng seems to be in its perfect looking or curing, which, if not properly done, destroys its market ^ ralue altogether. Heretofore this Miring has been done in an air ight born, usually twenty by d wentv feet, supplied with a sys * em of sheet iron flues, measuring jj (bout -ten inches in diameter. b These flues ure heated from one c ir two furnaces, and in order to ? :ecure the best results each barn f equires the watchful care of an t ixpert curer for at least seventy r lours. A barn of this size named, if ^ properly attended to, will cure he tobacco from live acres of land, covering a time period of four weeks. m Most prominent among the large growers here are Messrs F J [them & Sons, who have under 1 cultivation seventy-five acres in J tobacco alone. Since going out 5 )f the naval stores business these 2 gentlemen have turned their at J tention very largely to farming, J *nd have under cultivation above J i thousand acres of varied crops. / in speaking of tobacco culture / ihis correspondent gathered from ( Mr F. Rheui a theory of curing 4 which, if perfected, would revo- I lutionize the tobacco interests of C [he conntry. Said he: ?4With fa- ( vorable conditions another season ( we propose to try the steam ( method of curing. Our barns will J be, say, fifty by one hundred feet, J partitioned off" for convenience, j and heated by steam pipes iu the J usual manner of such things. The J steam gauge will be our ther- ] mometer and one fireman and ; one expert curer will do the work." Both corn and cotton crops are - - i 1 looking well and farmers nave * very little grass.?News and Courier.
