A Bfight Light Goes Out
Mr J A Sullivan, of the Charleston
News and Courier's staff, died
' very suddenly last Monday night
while at his post of duty. Mr Sul.
livan is best known to thousands of
hit admirers as the creator of Mr
1 0
"Nathau Beeswax," whose droll
r . *
sayings and fantastic ;doings were
recorded from time to time iu the
News and Courier. Although but
bat a young man?only twenty-seven
years of age?Mr Sullivan had
achieved a reputation for humor and
satire that extended throughout the
State, and his chronicles of ''Mr
Beeswax" wera read with avidity by
' all. Hit death is a distinct loss to
8oath Carolina journalism. ,
Senator Tillman, in a joint debate
wRh'8enator J R Burton, of Kansas,
~gbve his views on the race question
(Madison,Wisconsin, Monday night
before an audience ofjeight thousand
; people. It is reported that at the
close of the debate the impression
prevailed that the South Carolinian
bad the beat of the argument As a
test of sentiment Seuator Tillman
offered to hold an after meeting for
a the purpose of organising an immigration
society with the object of
bringing to Wisconsin three hunthousand
negroes from the
8duth. It is needless to say that
Northern friends of the negro
tpok no stock in the proposed organillation.

Now, why should old Williamsburg

subject of good roads? v
As I have previously said 1 1
don't know of better conditions *
any where for the construction ot 1
good highways than are those ;
that obtain m Williamsburg;
county. The land is level and /
easily drained and the dirt is as /
good as can be found anywhere |
for road-building. /
Why then can't we we fall in f
line with our sister counties and (
call a mass-meeting, inviting j
some prominent speakers, say (
Senator Latimer or Senator Till- I
man, or others that might be (
naned, to be present, who could I

this very important enterprise?
It does seem to me that if our
people could only realize the
vast hoard of wealth that is locked
up in the fertile soil of old Williamsburg
it would not be long
before we could show to the world
that our fair land is the garden
spot of South Carolinun. And in
my humble judgment the quickest
way to bring about the de- |
sired developements in our inidst
is to first build good roads and
second, good schools.
>iow. fellow citizens, let's hear
from you. Time is moving and
we cannot afford to wait. I am
with you in anything for the
upbuilding of old Williamsburg.
Yours very truly,
J. Davis Carter.
