NO. 14 J I- HHkimm nil o ITU n? n 1 W6RK OF A FIREBUG. T6rch Applied to a Negro's Barn and Stables at IhdiantdWn. Last Sunday l.ight Brown MudiPou, a respectable negro living on liev W II Hodges' place in the I11Uiaxitown section, hud his barn and stables burned with all the com and forage contained In the barn, besides two of his horses were burned to I death and the third was so badly j injured that it will probably die. j The unfortunate owner also lost six ; tons of fertilizer, a two-horse wagon J ? and othijr ptoperty. The fire was undoubtedly of iuceudiary origin and on Tuesday Abrum Wilson, a darkey of uusa-! vory reputation living in the community, was arrested on suspicion! and brought to Kings tree for a hearing before Magistrate Wallace. J The evidence against the accused j was all circumstantial and of so} flimsy a nature that the case was i dismissed and the negro released. The circumstances attending this affair show it to have been an act of premeditated and wiuiton incendiar' ism and the good people of that , neighbor howl owe it to themselves and their community to lend all possible assistance to the authorities in bringing the guilty miscreant to -1 justice, STOVE REPAIRING. The Slayer of The State's Editor Ar* raigned Yesterday. Columbia, S. C.?April 7: James H Tillman is expected to appear in court tomorrow morning for the first time to answer for the killing of Mr N G Gonzales. This is somewhat of an unexpected turn in this j case. Upon the expectation that the trial would begin on next Monday the State's witnesses liave been rttinimniifd for that dav. The trraild jury has returned a true bill against Tillman. The defence can make a motion tomorrow to attack the validity of the drawing of the grand jury. It can make a motion for a change of venue, or it can move to quash the indictmeirt on . hic-h the true bill was found. What the defence will do is not known. Bail having been refused Tillman the impression is that he is anxious to have the case go to trial. Senator B R Tillman arrived here this afternoon and visited the office of counsel in the case for his nephew. The State has announced its readiness to go to trial and w ill he represented by ex-Attorney General Bellinger, Col Andrew Crawford and Solicitor Thurmond. McConnell of This County 1 ells of His New Home. Editor County Kecord:? I desire 10 claim a short space in the columns of your next issue to let my many friends hear from me. 1 have just closed a very interesting meeting at Little River, one of my churches, with grand results. Our meeting commenced Saturday, March 21, and we were forced to close it Saturday night, the 28th, on account of our approaching quirterlv conference; but our week's work was not unsuccessful. The blessed holy spirit met. with us in the very first service and we ha : line congregation* throughout the meeting, with five proteasing Christianity and two applicants for membership. Little River is situated in a very pleasant section of this county. It. borders along the sea-coast, which makes it a very pleasant dwelling-place. The steamer "Sanders,'' which runs Irom Little River to* Wilm'ngton twice a week, lands at,the wharf near the church. We had the pleasure not only of enjoying the services every evening at 7:30 o'clock, but also of spending the day in visiting among our people and raaktng new acquaintances. It was also pleasant to walk along the beach, and we enjoyed the delicious oyster roasts. After enjoying these bodily comforts it was a j pleasant privilege to return to the | house ot the Lord and commuue with the holy spirit. Mr Editor, we spent ten days down there and at the close of ? ? ? ?AM Crthiti^otr tiinrhi I uur IllCt'llIlt llll uaiuiuaj uife.'v our people surprised their pastor with an old-fashioned pounding, which consisted of hams, canned goods, sugar, coffee and rice. All this is very encouraging and mattes us feel that our people do not mean for their pastor to suffer; but the best of all is the feeling that the Lord is with .us. Our congregations are increasing at all our churches. The cause is progressing and we are hopeful of a prosperous year in Ziou. Respectfully yours, S. J. MCCoxnbu^ Loris, S. C., April 4,190& . / ' .. &-? TILLMAN TRIAL PUT OFF. Motion for the Continuance Made by Defence. The case against James II Tillman has been continued until the July tenn of court. The motion for the continuauce was made by the defence. The defence based ih?4 ftnnliVntinn for a onntiniianne of the case, first, on the affidavit of physicians that Capt J A White was too ill to attend the court, and second on the affidavit that Miss Mary Julia Roper (another witness for the defence) was in New York and could not be gotten here for the trial.? On May 1 The Hecord will give a prize of five dollars for the best essay on the Confederate flag submitted by any boy or girl attending the public schools.
