The Texas Cotton Seed Crushers* ' Association at a late meeting held In I Texas, passed a resolution confirming that the high price of beef was due to > a shortage lu seed products. It la probable that there will be no more Invasion of Mississippi and Alabama by Texas mills in search of seed. "The cattlemen who were expected i.ere to expostulate over their alleged bad treatment during ths past year have not put in appearance as yet. and may not. The crushers do not seem concerned over the threat of some of the cattlemen to operate their own mills. The fact that the 8wift Company has recently purchased half s dozen mills at different points was net commented on by any of the crushers to whom It was mentioned, save to the effect that Swift would probably be. able to use more feed than those mills would provide. "A resolution was adopted deprecating 'any act of congress that may tend ts reduce the price of cattle and hogs.' and alleging that the present high price of meat is due 'to a shortage In seed products.' " This would seem to show there were two sides to this Question of high beef and that In so far aa Texas is ooncerned the price of beef is bound to vary with the price of cotton seed hulls and cotton seed meal. In proportion as the grass area of Texas has diminished, the cattle-raisers have been compelled to buy feed stuffs, and the only available feed-stuffs hi quantity is cotton seed hulls and cotton soed meal. Hulls have been selling within the last year or two in Texas as high as H4 a ton. This means that the meat supply In the future is largely dependent upon the cotton seeu oil business, and that the people of the Southeastern States will probably go much mors extensively into the business of raising cattle for beef purposes after they And out as much about the values of hulls and meal as the Texas cattle man has found out by the necessities of the vase. It would seem as thourh the eastern farmer now has the advantage of the Texan In raising c&ttle for beef purposes and in handling eattle for dairy purposes. All the cotton seed products that ara needed for cattle raising and competition with other markets can be had right at home through the Southern Cotton OU Company of the C&roUnas and Georgia, through any of Its mills , or Its headquarters at Columbia. 8. The County Commissioners to Employ an Overseer in Each Township The county board 6f commissioners met Monday in the supervisor's office to consider a plan for working the public roads during the ensuing year. After carefully considering the various suggestion offered it was decided to work the roads by townships, the plan being to hire a good man in each township by the day and empower him to employ as mauy day laborers as he finds necessary at wages not to exceed a certain limit. Under this system the county will fnrnish the necessary implement* for working the roads. As soon a3 the weather permits the work of repairing the highways will be commenced. DR.
