BASS, Esq. l *-*' "Last Wednesday Mrs. Sam Ep' ttein arrived from Now York and oined her husband who opened a stock of goods hi re some two inontl s ago. > Mr. D. R Knight returned* to his ' home a few miles above here last week. He had been spending some weeks.in Columbia for his health, which seems to be much improved. y One of our tobacco planters carried a loud of tobacco to another , market Wednesday. He was not ?tisfied with the pricf" bid; where e wpon he brought it luck home and <m Thursday, without saving any thing about the offer of the other market, put the load on the floor. It *went off at about $140.00 more than L- "he bid at the other market. This 3 is not a fable, but it has a moral | tliat is evident, towit: Bring your j I tobacco to Lake City if you want its alue. By agreement of counsel the rules & to show cause in the Lake City and Scranton "Dispensary" cases will 4 he arranged before Judge Dantzler in Columbia, on Monday, November 3ad. The outcome of this matter is | being watched for with the keenest interest throughout the State. V. L. Bass, Esq.. is away (his ; week in attendance upon the Court Commou Pleas at Florence. Last week we stated that Dr. Carrsway and his bride passed through here. Now, this was a mistake. It - was not Dr. Carrawav, but Dr. Hemingway, Dr. Carrawav hasn't a bride yet but.?We don't know how this error occurred or what excuse to offer for it May be we had Dr. CarraVay connected in our mind with the idea of a marriage and inadvertently put him down as the happy man in the instance referred to. Moses McClean had his horse killed in town a few nights ago. McClean says the bridge across Church Street near Mr. Han-ell's gave way. ^Some others claim that the ground i caved in by the side of the bridge. Be that as it may, the horse went down. He was dragged out but died in an hour or two. The horse was - not a very valuable one. K Dr. DnRant has purchased from Mr. S. J. Cameron the two places about a mile or two below here on CI the road to Indiantown. Mrs. B. B. McWhite and daughter, Miss Martha, of Savage, stopped % in town a short while a few days ago. Miss Leuna Moore, who came home sick about three weeks ago, has recovered and returned to the ' "Columbia Female College Monday. Misses Edwards and Stanley, both of Marion have charge of the Beulah school at Bethlehem. Miss Edwards is principal and Miss Stanley assistant. These ladies have opened the school with encouraging prospect. This school was taught by iter, and Mrs. Sadler last year. Mr. John R. Joyner will return to his position on the Southern road in a day or so. At this writing, Monday, we understand that the following from our town will attend the State Fair: Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Godwin, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. C. 'Moore, Misses Ella Morris and Ethel Rodgers and Mr. B. L. Singletary. Others of whom *"* we have not heard will no doubt make the visit * ! The fall crop of snap beans is now being put on the market. Messrs. H. H. and J. I). Singletary shipped a car load last week. Mr. L. 0. Hollaway, the American Tobacco Go's buyer, last Saturday night for Danville, Va. Mr. W. S. Moore is kick from Richmond. Mr. John M. Graham, of Colnmbin, was in town Sunday. He came down on a visit 011 business connected with the estate of his brother, W. W. Grahhm. Irregular attendance tends very strongly to demoralize the work of the school. Scholars who miss a day or two each week soon drift into a listlcssness and a carelessness in their work. Every pupil is required t<> briug an excuse of each tardv and absence. Parents can help the teachers b\ bearing this in mind. Exci se should be scut first day after the pupil is absent or tardy. The rainy, muddy weather on Monday kept a number of pupils away from school. Drawing has been introduced in twio of the rooms this session, and has proven to be of much beuelit. It will be tried with other departments latter on during the session. Only 16 pupils made an overage of 90 per cent, or more last month, of which number H can'ie from the first and second grades. No one in the 6th, 7th and 9th grades made the "honor roll."' Personals. (Contributed by Miss Annie Davidson, of the 9th grade.) Our school is very progressive this year, all we lack now is a new building and o"ur school will be as good as any little town school in tin State. Marie Cooper was absent last Monday and Tuesday on account of sickness. We have recitations every morning by three of the pupils until we get around. They are very interesting and we would be pleased to have anv of the parents call in and hear them. Our "honor roil" was not so large last month as we should like it to have been, but we hope to make it larger this month as all seem to be getting along much better. At the appointed time, to the sweetly solemn strains of the wedding march, skillfully rendered- by Miss Blanche Gibson, came the bride and groom, preceded by the brides maids and grooms men in the folowing order: Miss Birdie Mnnnerlyn and Mr. Tonnnie Bellune, Miss Lee and Dr. Pate, Miss Carrie Belle Baker, the maid of honor, and Mr. C. The bridal .party formed a semicircle. near the centre of which stood the two sweet little flower girls. | Then followed the ceremony whose! , impressiveness was accentuated by j the earnest and kindly manner of Rev.
