DuRant has returned from a v isit to relatives in Columbia. We had a fine rain Monday night. It was preceded by h rerriho electrical display. Mr. S. M. Askins has invested in a traveling peanut roaster. It is operated by gasoline. Mrs. Delia D. Carter is away on a visit to her daughter Mrs. D. II Crossland, in Conway. \ H Williams i!fc Co. lost their dry kiln and about $75 worth of staves by fire Tuesday. The town council began work on ? the streets Wednesday cleaning sidewalks and surface drains. R. J. Kirk, Esq., came up from Kingstree Monday to see Judge Baldwin on legal business. Mr. E. M. Rodgers left Saturday for Richmond where he goes to take a position with the Tredgar Iron Works.' Messrs. J. H. V. Gaskins and Robt. H. Singletary went to Wil mington Monday and returned Wednesday. There are so many strangers and visitors in town now-a-days that we van chronicle the arrival and depature of only a few, very few. Some of our folks attended the picnic at Mrs. Phenie Fillmore's Friday. The picnic was a splendid success and was a very enjoyable occasion. We have another tobacco buyer and a strong one too. He is Mr. J. G. Penn. Jr., of Danville, Ya., and represents Messrs Pernbleton & 1'enn, Par grille, He came in last week. Messrs. H. L. Mozingo and .John Pate, of Stokes Bridge, Darlington, are visiting at Mr. H. L. "Whitlock's. These young gentlemen were in the lower ]uirt of the county last week on a deer hunt. Town clerk Rodgers issued three market licenses last week. This makes live who ar_- privileged to sell fresh beef, pork, fish. etc. It would seem that there should bo no scarceire of fresh meats in this town. We hope the readers of The Record will pardon the paucity of news in our column this week. We were on the campaign away from Tuesday until Saturday last week and have been able to gather only a few items since our return. After the 26th we will settle down. On that day our reckonings will be taken and we will learn "where we ary at." Messrs. Myers nnd James Hanna, under the firm name of Hanna Bros, have opened a stock of goods in the iSingletary building next door to Mr. W. T. Askins. These young gentlemen are straight forward honest and reliable men and we sincerely hope they will succeed in their undertaking. We are always glad to have such excellent young men come into our town. The tobacco farmers are certainly "in it" this year. They have made good crops and an- now getting very high prices for their stuff right lure in Lake City, the equal of any t<e hacco market in the Stat?*. We understand that Mr. W. A. Webster, who has seven acres of tobacco, has already sold to the amount of jfizuu.uu and s:m n;.ssome on nana. We have heard that experienced tobacco men declare that Mr. B. W. Stewart will clear $5C(>(?.00 on hie twenty seven acres. Many others have done and are doing equally well. Such a country and er.ch a town arcbound to go to the front and stay there.
