Mrs. Dr. DuRant went up to Columbia Friday to visit at her old home. 1 Rev. S. S. Gasque came down from Lilesville, N. 0., on a visit a few days ago. Mrs. D. M. We had a tine rain Monday afternoon. This was much needed, and will no doubt be of vast beneft. fit to all field and garden crops. Tobacco buyers W. D. Majors and E. T. White, both ot Souin Boston, Va., came in last week, ? and have settled down to business. We need small enterprises that ; will furnish labor to the idlejiands . and that will bring money into the country. There are plenty of I stores throughout the country, but factories, manufacturing concerns are too few, and are just what is needed to build up the town and community. Auctioneer Motley's voice has beer: heard at the Star Warehouse for several days. Became in last week. Mr. Motley doesn't have much effect on the scalds, but in 1 he matter of the amount of noise that comes tiom the hole in his hp i? pdiinl to a base ball rine with the rooters thrown in lor ?Ood measure. Mr. Bertie Morris, son of Mr. Henry Morris ut Rosemary, was buried in the Askins cemetery here last Thursday. He died at * Jus father's of typhoid lever, and his body was brought up on u78'' Thursday morning. Mr. Morris , was well known here, having been a pupil at the Lake City High .St'hoo! under the pnncipalship ol 'Mr. Aekerman. Mr. J. J. Morris, our fellow townsman, is his uncle. There was a picnic here Fridav * ' - ^ '.4 4 l? A /\1 AMA/1 in i ne grove ui iue umicu .Methodist church at the L:ike. Quite a crowd attended. On the wav I ! back A us Burgess began to throw 'around words not learned in Sunidav school, whereupon Mr. Godj win put him out. U. H. Kichardson, the barber, became offended at this and look liis place in the : road with A us. The two had a ! walk of about eight miles to reach home. That night all hands ati tended a hot supper. It is by no ' means a difficult matter to guess the rest, A negro hot supper i without a row seems beyond the pale of probability. Hie town council passed around the hat i Monday morning and look in a few dollars. I Mr. B. M. This is an excellent location?convenient to r-ii 1 rn??<"l In clrnM nnii to tllP town. [The plant will have a capacity of from 5,000 to 8,000 bricks per day. We are triad to see such an enterprise open up. and we believe thut it will prove a good investment to him who has the temerity to make the venture as well as to the entire community. The matter of dispensaries at Lake City and Scranton is again atlractingattention. W.L. Hass and S. W. (L Shipp, who obtained the injunction lasi. spring, are the attorneys lor those who are resisting the efforts to establish dispensaries at these nlaces. On Thurs day Judge Dantzler granted a temporary injunction restraining the County Hoard of Control from taking any further steps towards establishing dispensaries at Lake City and Scranton. in Lee township. and at the same time issued a jrule requiring the Board of Oon! trol to sho.v cause at Orangeburg on the 16th instant why the injunction should not be made permanent. The attorneys in these leases (there are two?one as to Lake City and one as to Scran'on) raise a number of questions. The j constitutionality of the dispensary i law is attacked on several grounds, litis claimed that the law contra venes two different sections of tlie 'constitution. The different ques! tions raised and the grounds upon i which the constitutionality of 'lie ! hnv i? attacked would hardly be ! of much interest to the general public. Sufficient to say dispensaries will not be opened at once and possibly not at all under the present law. '!i '} ) ; Doings at Dock, g Out farmers aie about through [ laying: by. We wish our young friend snceess. The young folks enjoyed a lawn party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Johnson last Wednesday night. They all repott a pleasant time. We are sorry to report a great deal of sickness in our community. Our tobacco farmers are busy curing the weed. They all seem to be well pleased with the prospects. Your scribe had the pleasure of attending a basket picnic in the grove of Mr. It- B. McClarv, near Kingstree, Thursday. This picnic - ? - - r __ i . cenainiy is wormy 01 a "wnieup,'' but I feel that it is I that am not worthy to do the writing. Notwithstanding the hot, dry and dusty weather, the day was a perfect success in every particular, from the heavily ladeA table ol delicious viands to the tempting, coojjng and delightful lemonade barrel. And last, but not t?y any means least, the enchanting smiles | of no many bright, pretty anu ; charming girls. All we lacked was a lew of | those pleasant fellows?the candi! dates. The crowd lingered beneath the spreading branches ot the shady I oaks until the descending sun was ; growing golden, then the old folks wended their way homeward, while the youth and beauty repaired to the pleasant home of Mrs. Hanna, where they enjoyed 'skipping the light tasiastic toe'* until the light of day had vanished and even the night was tar spent. At last reluctantly the picnickers said good-bye and departed for home, carrying in their minds pictures that will hang on the walls of tnemoiy never to be effaced by the cobwebs of time. Whippoorwill. <?; Seen at Smiths | A number of our boys attended the campaign meeting in Kingstree on the Fourth, and seemed to eniov the occasion verv much. U * Editor Cunningham, of the Lee County Vindicator, spent some time with relatives in our com| m unity last week. McKmght aie glad to welcome him back sale from tiie j Philippine Islands, where he has been stationed for the past three years in the United States army. Along with his other numerous friends, I am glad to hear that Sam B. McGill will, in the near future return to his home here ; Irom Wadamalaw, S. C., where he { has been at work for some months.
