The captain of one rather old and Blow steamer of years ago, finding that he would hare to be a long time In China before he received a full cargo of tea and would have probably to return in ballast, began, to every one's astonishment, to say that, owing to the repairs that had been done to his engines, he hoped to make a racing passage back to England. Then, still more to the ustonlshment of the captains of the faBt steamers and the world at large, he commenced to back himself to make the fastest passage home. In such very considerable sums of money did he wager that people began to think there was something in it, and hi> mpri-hflnts sent their tea almost en tirely to bis ship, arguinjfcthat as tbe captain stood to lose ?.r?00 * e repairs to his steamer's engines bad probably put him in a position to bet utmost on a certainty. Of course the steamer, whose greatest speed was eight knots an hour, arrived (In England weeks aftCT the others. and the captain lost ?230, but Instead of having to lie In China walling his chance of cargo coming In from the Interior, a probable delay of weeks, be had cleared In a few dnjp after bis bets became known to the public with a fall ship, thus recouping to bis owners, who of course paid his betting losses. a considerable number of thousands of pounds profit.?Blackwood's Magazine. Tb?r r?e Morphia*. "Snakes of many poisonous varieties can be handled without danger if tbe handling is done properly." says a dealer in animals. "Most people imagine that snake charmers handle only nonpoisonous snakes, or snakes with the poison sacs removed, but such Is not always tbe case. I have seen snake cbnrmers fearlessly handle reptiles of the deadliest variety without apparent danger to themselves, the snakes In fact making no attempt to bite. A snake does not bite unless angered, and snake charmers are carerul In their handling to soothe the animal Instead of alarming It. They generally begin their manipulation by stroking and avoid all sudden movement in handling the make. Most snake charmers I have come in contact with were morphine Sends, and by the absorption of this poison they were Impervious to the poison of any but the most deadly variety of snakes." I Two filftt to tho Orchestra. On one occasion, when Von Bulow had to conduct an orchestral concert at which a piece written by an aristocratic amateur was to be performed, the composer requested permission to direct a rehearsal and on obtaining It opened a parcel containing seventy pendis. which be banded to the members of the band, asking them to mark his intentions in their Darts, as he would give them by word of mouth. Bona tod Bulow noted this mutter of detail and left the hall. Presently be returned. also with a parcel, and on resuming h!i place at the desk gruvely handed out seventy pieces of India rubber, with which the players were to erase the directions which the oomposer had given them. Hwahroom Teata. There are two sure ways of telling the difference between wholesome mushrooms and the poisonouG fungi which so closely resemble them. If they re to be boiled, put an onion with them, and if the onion remains white there is nothing to fear. If II: turns black, throw away the contents of the dish, for Doison lurks there. A common test is to sprinkle a littie salt on the pink underpart. and if It turns black you have real mushrooms. If the pink changes to yailow. you have a danger signal before. If precautions like these were taken with all mushrooms:, fresh or canned, there would be less sickness in the world. I | In every towiT"] L and village I may be had, j Mica I M 4x181 ' v r Grease!
