' I "H* She {Jountu _ . ?? ? ? ?? v VOL. XVIII. KINGSTREE, S. C., THURSDAY, MAY 1. 1902. NO. 18 " CRITICS MUD. JUSTICE" CRITICIZES "CITIZEN" AND "A PRIVATE INTHE RANKS." < Thinks the Weekly Mail's Correspondents Should be Willing to Let the People Choose. Tho articles of "Citizen" and ' A Private in the Ranks," which appeared recently in The Weekly Mail seem to be attracting very little attention in this section: in fact, so far as we have been able to learn, they have produced no effect whatever except an effect < opposite to the one intended by , tlie authors. I These writers disclaim any ani , mosity towards Senator Williams yet they make hi in the subject ot their articles. They appear to be , so much frightened at the mere , ii?uf h#? max' bite that / 1?.WUR... ^ _ they are trying to choke him off before he attempts to take hold. Their object, we suppose, is to try | to create the impression that they < are voicing the sentiment# of the . people of Williamsburg and thus f persuade Dr. Williams to remain , unannounced and leave the field , open to their man. Their insincerity in their pro- < tessions of esteem for Dr. Williams i is apparent fhronghout their ar- , tides. ''Private" after avowing ( his personal friendship, declares < that the Senator is the child of de- i signing politicians and could by < no means win on his own merits. ( "Private" thus betrays his own j incinporitv and at the same time - declares that that great body of ( voters who sent Williams to the ] senate term after term did not past intelligent votes, but voted , like sheep. And now he pretends J to want to put these same mutton J heads, as he calls-them by infer- ] ence, "to thinking' This same writer says that the j list as proposed by- liimself and "Citizen" should bcM>oiled down to one and 4iput him out as the people's candidate." Who are to 1 do the boiling? "Private" aad , r* I "Citizen"? Who will then pui j out the "people's candidate?" "Private" and "Citizen?" Would < ? i._ 7-^. sucn a one ue me jjwpw ? date? > ' Citizen"" insinuates that Sena- , tor Williams thinks ;'he was ere- j ated just lo fill an office and that ( no one else can fill it but himself," j while the '-Private" indirectly de- ( clares that he is a "would-be ( political boss." These professing , friends and admirers have not the , temerity to make their charges openly and boldly, but resort to . insinuations and indirection. Is , _lhis the proper way to attack a J man ? i Now, would it not be a better j expression of the will of freemen j for the peopUi not ''Citizen" nor "Private" nor any one else, but for the people to say who shall be J their candidate? This is a free t country. Let every one of the < eighteen proposed by these writ- 1 ers, let Dr Williams, should he see fit, and let every one else who , chooses come out for tfceoffice, and ] then let the people, not "Citizen" { nor "Private" nor any other man j t i dictate, but let the people choose their official. Should they say that Williams must step down and out, we are quite sure he will do so cheerfully ami gracefully. We understand that Dr. Williams has demanded the names of the authors of the two articles referred to, but that the editor ol I he Mail refused to give the names. Justice.
