I Negro Brute Criminally Assaults a
k Respected White Woman.

In. R. Uayaes, a respected white
woman. was ravished by a negro
[brute, Julius Gibbs, The nezro
came to the house on a pretenseof
bucinese, Mrs. Ilavnes1 husband
beinc absent. Mrs. Haynes went
I bo the door with a baby in her
|nrms. After a few momenta conversation
the burly brute rushed
'up the steps and overpowered the
helpleas victim, snatching thechild
and throwing it aside. Mrs. Harnes
never lost consciousneaa and
when she was released ran to a
neighbors house and gave the
alarm. Meantime the negro had

with Sheriff Burch at the head.
Hie negro was captured at his
time about a mile trom the scene
the crime.
Threats of lynching were freely
lade, but the sheriff stood off thej

by wire with the facts
in the case, after conferring with
the solicitor, agreed to order a
special session of court to try the

March 31, and as the brute has
confessed it is not hard to foretell
the result of his trial. i

Mrs. Nesmith and her daughter,
Miss Mabel, returned to their
homa at Docks Saturday,

to Hot Springe, Ark., where she
will spend some time.
Mr. Lonnie Flagler, Jr., of Indiantown,
is spending a few days
in our town.
Mr. W. E. Neimith has about
recovered from his recent illness.
Rer. Wm. Ruff is spending this
week with his family at Leesvilie.
Rev. Mr. McConnell tilled the
pulpit at the Methodist church
here Sunday afternoon, preaching
an able sermon.
Another pile of crossties were
set on fire here last Wednesday
by sparks from an engine, but fortunately
the fire was discovered
and put out before any serious
damage was aone.
Mr. W. P. McGill is much better,
having had a slight attack of

attempt to rerire or reorganize the
Bible class next saDDain. no one

There were good congregations
at the Methodic church Sunday,
both morning and evening. Kev. <
H. J. Cautheu, the pastor, preached
iu the morning from 9th chap- 1
ter of 2nd Corinthians. At night his
discourse was -lOur relatiou to God
and to our fellow man." How important
that we should witness,
correctly testify from original
knowledge, testify that we have
been there, testify from no selfish
aootive or purpose. Let us not be
elfish in our declaration of ^od.
Thorough consistency is a jewel
in our evidence before the world.
