Charlton DuRant, Esq., of Manning, was here Saturday on legal business. Mr. Durantis the partner of our solicitor. Misses Sue and Cecil Severance went down to visit Charleston and the exposition Thursday. They apent several days. Mr. J. L. One of our young men is attending school on Mondays and Friday*?. Ha recites ills lessons privately. Mr. W. T. Askins is determined to keep the dispensary away from i T.ake City ;if voting will do it. Two boys came to his hause together on Tuesday of last week. They will be old enough to vote legally in twsnty-one years. The morning after tneir arrival Mr. Askins ordered a car load af meal. Isn't meal an ingredient of that soft baby food sailed pap ? Oa the evening of the 19th Mr. deorge J. Brothers and Miss Erwin Severance were united in the holy bonds of wedlock. It was a church marriage, and one of the prettiest that has been witnessed here. Even before the appointed hour, 7 o'clock, the Baptist church, where the ceremony took place, was crowded with a concourse of inter ted friends. The church was tastefully decorated and well lighted. Theyeungcouple takin? their vows, the man of God pronouncing the solemn words never to be revoked, the attendants and the background of evergreens and flowers made a pretty picture and one likely to linger in the halts of memory. The short ami simple, but impressive, eeremony was performed by the Rev. T. J. Rooke. The attendants: Mr. R. J. Severance, of Florence, best mat), ?nd Miss Ethel V .Brothers, of Charleston, mnid of honor; Mr. William baiters, of Charleston, and Miss Cecil Severance; Mr. J. W. Floyd and Miss Sue Severance. G. Eaddy, of Johnsonville. After the marriage the bridal party and a fewe guests repaired to the liome of the bride's parents and attempted to do justice to the nice supper served. The ---jroung couple went to Charleston on the 8.30 train. Mr. Brothers is an engineer of the A. C. Line, and the bride is the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs.P. E. Severance. They will make their home in Florence, where Mr. Btothers recently built a nice residence. By the loss of a Severance a union is made, and the couplo are Brothers, notwithstanding one is a woman. We congratulate Mr. Brothers, for he secured a wife of whom anv one nifrnt. nrmiri. Caesar Gaskins, alias William Johnson, one of the negroes sent lo the chaingang last week lor stealing sundry articles from Mr. T. A, dlakeley's store at Santee Crossing, an account of which appeared in last week's Record, made a bold oretiK ior jiueriv lasi Sunday afternoon, which seems to have been successful. While the guard, Mr. E. R. Melvm, was marching the convicts into the cab for the night, just about 5 o'clock p. m., Gaskins suddenly jumped over the tengue of the cab and darted behind the vehicle. As soon as possible the guard ran around the cab alter him and the negro broke for the woods. Mr. Melvin shot at him twice at close range but tne negro continued running, although it is believed that ssme of the shot struck him. The blood hound at the camp was at once released and put on the trail, but the negro took to ihe water and thereby prevented the dog from following him, thus making good his escape. The charngang is still at work near the lowtr bridge. In the Magistrate's Court, On Monday, the State vs. Waiters Singleiarr. assault and battery: guilty and sentenced to pay 925 fine or to 30 days on the chain gang. He took the days. On Tuesday, the State vs. Arthur Fulton, burglary and larceny. This caae was sent to the court ot general sessions and the defendant committed to jail. Knight gave an entertaining lecture last night in the Castle Hall of Kingslree Lodge Knights of Pythias. Besides being a "Knight" by name and predilection the lecturer is one of the brightest newspaper men of the State, being editor and proprietor of the Sumter Herald.
