r THE SABKATH SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL LESSON COMMENTS FOR AUCUST 2a. fcubjpct: Abraham anil Isaac, C.en. xxll., 1 - i 4? biolilen Text. Ileb. xi.. 17 ? Memory Versee, C-S? Commentary on the Day's Lesson. 1. "After these thin;;'." The thin?" reorded in the previous chapter regarding Jla-^ar and Ishmncl a.id their banishment. "J.hd prove Abraham" <K. V.) "Not incite to sin (.K.s. 1: 1"), but try, prove. ? Ive occasion for the development of faith." 1 Cor. 10: 13; Heb. 11: 17; James 1: 12. It is well to see that Cod confers a fiend honor upon us v hen He thus tests w our hearts. Tempting is tor the s ike of leading men to evil: testing them i? tor the |iurj):..?e of malting them better. The trials of life are to prove what we are. to see if we are fitted for larger things. "Here I am." Hcadv ;.t a moment's notice for Cod's service. 2. "Thine o:iiv son." His only son l?y fhirah, h;s legal wife. Had Abraham's who'e soul not been stayed sir.iplv on the Lord he never could have yielded unhesitating obedience to such a searching command. Abraham desired earnestly to be let into the mystery of redemption, and Cod let hitn feel by experience what it vva? to lose a beloved son. "Land of Mol iah." A gem nil phrase for the mountainous district of Jerusalem. This Moriah was the same ?-ite upon which Solomon built the temple, and Calvary was nearby. "Tor a purnt offering." Abraham was living amidst idolaters who sacrificed their first born t<? their idols, and "Abraham himself might not have been sure that he ought not to offer a< costly sacrifices as the heathen did: but Cod at this time tauglst Ji.ru and his descendants not to offer huin :i sacrifices, and yet they were to retain the spirit of &ucrinc3 out ot which tlicy fc:? v.\" J. "Rose up c.ar.v." That there might I?e no appearance o: delay or leim-tance on l:i< ! art iie made every preparation for tiie saeri.'icv be:" ire .-riling oat?the nnftia!?, the knife, the servants to convey then; ?vd he it.: 1 the painful secret pent up ia his bo-mi during the three days l:e van journeying to Mori a!; He murm trcd not,rr.r to i!c counsel with t!e<h and blood. He waited no. to i msv.lt with Sarah, nor listen to the misgivings o; his own mind. Tiie command was cltai and the obediente I ronipt. ... 4. "J he th-.rd < ay.' Bcer-sne.in. Abraham's present home, was a town 0:1 t 12 southern border of Palestine, frty-f.ve miles south of Jerusalem, and three days v.as the usual tirre it would take them to make the minty. In the three days' journey ... re was t megivon for rellection; thus the struggle of faith is not short and momenta'v, but prolonged. As this sacrifice was typical of that of Christ, so here may be a reference to the thin! day of }{is resurrection. "Saw the place." The b'll Moriah can be seen about three milc? distant by one coming from Beer-sheba. "A.od worship." Perform a solemn act of devotion which God requires. 1 "Come again to you." This ror.v have been an expression of faith that God would restore his son even if actually sacrficcd. Heb. 11: 17-19. This reminds us of our Lord in Gethsemane; going into such an cgcr.-.y, f'e would net admit others to go with Biro. 6. "Laid it upon Tsnr.c." Tsaac carried the wood for the burnt offering. so Christ carried the tree whereon He died (John 19: 17); the binding of Isaac was also typical, for so Christ was bound. Matt. 27: 2. "Took the fire."' That is. carrying in his hand the vessel containing the coals * of fire. 7. "Where is the lamb?" The tenderness of this scene is only to be surpassed bv those of Gethsemare and Calvary. Nothing can be conceived more affectionate and affecting. 8. "Will provide." The patriarch spoke prophetically, and referred to that Lamb c: Cod who in the fulness of time should take away the sin of the world, and of whom Isaac was a most expressive type. The giving un by the father of his Oily and well beloved son (v. 3; John 3: 16), the ready submission of the son (v. 9; John 10: 13). the bearing of the instrument of death by the victim (v. f>: John J9: 17). the violent death consented to (v. 10: John 19: 16). the deliverance from death on the third clay (vs. 4. 12: Matt. 20: 19). can not be mere accidental coin 9. 'Bound Tsaae, his son."' Had not the patriarch been sustained by the full consciousness of acting in obedience to God's will, the effort must have been too great for human endurance; and ?ud pot Isaac, then probably twenty-five years of aze. displayed equal faith in submitting, this great trial could not" have been gone through. id. '"Stretched forth his hsnd." The deed is virtually done when the will shows firm determination. God who looketh upon the ^ear{ regardet'n the sacrifice as aire ad v made. H?; will take the will for the deed, but mcver the deed for the will. 1?. "The angel ?f the Lord." The very persogi who was represented by tlx* offering: the Lord Jesus, who calii Ilims^f Jeboc.ah (v. 16). and on lUs owa authoaty renews tlie promises of the covenant. Hi? was ever the rrcat SI* Aitor betwasc Ood and ngin. "Called unto Idte." Wheu wo rapnot see cyj, any side a wrap of then God comes and oiscn Aow? as a wonderful deliverance. 12- "Lay net thipe hand.'' The sacrifice i was virtually offered, the intention. the purpose to do it. was shown in all Beerrty and fulness. "I know.* The b?*t evidence of our fearing God is our being willing to honor Him with that which re dearest to us, and to part with ell for Him. "That, thou fearest God." This wae faith in action. Paul pays tout Aorebara was accepted by faith, and James eevs he was accepted by works o: obedience, but these are only two swic c of the same thing, for not a single act of faith can be named but what ha^ in it the nature of obedienee. *? .. ,-nr/i Thniiffh Christ was typified by Isaac, vet the offering of him was suspended, and in the meantime the sacrifice of beasts was accepted as a pledge' of that expiation for sin which should be made in "the fulness of time:" the {rreat principle of the Mosaic economy was the acceptance of animal sacrifices instead of human. 14. "Jehovah-jireh." That is. "The Lord will see, or provide." "It shall be seen." The meaning: is that libs was the spot of God's choice for the manifestation of His visible presence, where the sanctuary should be erected and sacrifices offered. After the ram had been offered the an pel of the Lord again called to Abraham and renewed the covenant that God had mcde with him. Abraham then returned to Keer-sheba.
