IUE SABBATH SCHOOL| INTERNATIONAL LESSON COMMENTS j FOR APRIL 14. Subject: Jesus Appear* to Mary, John j x\., 11-18 ? CoPlen Text, llfv. i.. 10? emoiy Verse*, 16-18 ? Commentary on the Day's Lesson. 11. "M iry." This was Mai.v Magdalen, i out of whom the Lord had oast seven dev- j ils. The epithet "Magdalene." whatever i ninv he ils meaning, seems chosen for the ; xpress purpose of distinguishing l>cr T*rom ! all other Marys. "Stood without." Peter j and John going (v. 10) commends Mary's j staying. To ihc grave site came before thoni; from the grave site went to tell them: to the grave she returns with them; at the grave she remains behind then. To stay while others stay is the world's , love; to stay when all are gone is constant i love. "Weeping." Site had great love for her Lord: He had done much for her. j "Stooped down." Because she was anx- < ions to see whether sne might not. after all. be mistaken about the absence of the body. She stooped because the top of the entrance was so low that she could not otherwise obtain a near view of the inside of the tomb. "The sepulchre." The scpulchre^ocrts to have been a square room ihewn out of a rock, nartly above ground, jits roof being as high as the top of the .door, wh'ch.formed its entrance. 12. "Two angels." Peter and John did i mot see the angels. The angels' presence I showed the Divine hand and care. They : were ministering spirits to comfort those j who were in such great sorrow and need. J and tbev gave explanation of what had j been done. no one else being .able. ine j supposed discrepancies in the number of angels seen is explained by Tossing. The (whole grave. the whole region about the Wave was invisibly swarming with ante's. There were not only two angels, but many of them. Sometimes one appears and sometimes another; at different places and sneaking different things. "In white." QThis wa3 an emblem of puritv. See llev. ! J9: S. 13. " Whv weenest thou?" Arc you ouite siwe that this empty tomb does not show that you ought to be rejoicing? f'Takcn awav my T.ord." While the other Women were terrified Mary seems to have liad no fear, so wholly was she taken un 1 prith her great desire of finding her Lord. ?he wrs readv to brave more heroically ( jthan ever all dancer if only she might find j (the 0nft she loved. i ( 14. "Turned herself back." Still v.vcning she turned awav from the angels. She i (turned to go again with the other women ( to Jerusalem, who had already departed. ' 1 but she had not as yet gone so far as to be out of the garden. Mary was so absorbed in grief, and her eves so dimmed jwith tnrs that she failed to rceognire I (Christ: besmts, she was not expecting to < .Tfcn? alive. as she had no conrention of His resurrection. 15. "Jesus saith unto her." Thi* was ; ' His fi^t noncarance. He afterward ai>pearcd on this same day to the other women returning f -om senulchre (Matt. 2*1: 9, fcfl), to Peter (Luke 24: .141/ to two discibles coing to Emmanus (Luke 24: 1.1?31), j and to ten apostles. John 20: 19?25. : ,Why wcepest thou?" Site had cause suf- 1 fieient to rejoice instpad or to weep. ."Whom eeekest thou?" He seeks to comfort i^er in her great grief. "The gardener." j lAnd therefore a servant of Joseph of Ari- j xnathca. who owned the tomb, and who, I of course, would be friendly. No other | person would be likely to be there at so j early an hour. "Have borne Him hence." [ 'fhink'nz that perhaps Joseph had or- ' jlered His bodv taken to some other place. ! r'l will take Him away." She would see 1 ithat it was done. She would be responsi- I Pble for His removal to a nroner place. To ithink that stranger hands had cared for ; jHim when she had brought spices for that t purpose was a bitter disappointment to . jner. 16. "Miry." Jesus stirred the affection ; "of the weeping woman at His side by ut- j tering her own name in tones that thrilled I her to the h"art and created the new. sublime convietmn that He had risen as Ke I had p-.'d. What transports of .iov must have filled this woman's heart! Let it be ( remarked that Marv sought Jesus more 1 fervently, and continued more affectionately attached to Him than any of the 1 Vr?-- therefore to her first Jesus is nleascd I to show Himself, unci she is inade the first i heraid of the gospel of a risen Saviour. j *'l!abbboni." My Master. "A whole wor'd of emotion and devotion in a word." j As Mary uttered the word she must have j .endeavored to fall down at the feet of her | .Ixn-ci, embracing them. 17. ' Touch Me not." "Cling not to Me." 1 he translation "touch Me not" ; gi\es a fa'se impression: the verb does rot mean to "touch." but to "hold on to" and 'Viing to." "t am rot yet ascended." j Mary appears to have held Hira by the i feot. and worshiped Him. Jesus says in effect: Spend no longer time with Me i now; I am not going immediately to j lieaven; you^ will have several opportuni- i ties of seeing Me again: but go and tell j ;My disC'n'es that 1 am, by and by, to as- I ;ce:?d to Mv Father and God. who is your Father ami God also: therefore, let them j fate courage. Do not rest your new faith j 'ipuw TVfv n/Arrvm'i?nl lit.* Ktir iinnn 1 h;ifc .spiritual life soon to be consummated with the Father. Then I shall receive your love, and we will resume our friendship. One touch through the Holy Ghost | ,is worth far more than any bodily presence. To be satisfied with His being re- | stored to life that she might be in His ' presence as before was to lose sight of the merits of His death. Henceforth He must | be believed in and worshiped as God. for i ,He '-as rot to remain in a'natural body. '"Go to My brethren." First servants, then disciples, then friends: now, after the resurrection, brethren. This involves i" itself eternal inheritance. "I ascend to ilv Father." I am clothing Mvse'f with My eternal form: I have laid dowu My life that I might take it again, and use it for the highest blessedness of My brethren. "My Father?vour Father? My God and your God." father of Christ by nature ^ 'and of men bv grace. His God only in connection who us; our uoa oniy in con^r" nection with Him. His eternal conscious* ness of the Father's love dignified all His human relations with the bather, and became the true inspiration of all consciousness of Cod possessed bv His disciples. 18. "Mary told the disciples." An apostle to the apostles. Mary was the first to eee Jesus and the first to proclaim His resurrection. This special message was clearly given to the woman who held His feet. St. Mark tells us (chap. 1C: 11) that the apostles could not believe what she said. They seem to have considered it as an effect of her troubled imagination. But tliev believed when they saw tha Lord.
