Lees birthday was observed as usual 1 by the ciosiug of all bant-s and many' stores during the day and at night by j the gathering of a large and enchusi- : astir audience at Hibernian hall under ! the auspices of the Daughters of the Confederacy. The oration was de- 1 llvered by Co!. Leroy F. Vouirans of ' Columbia, one of the most eloquent j veterans in the State, and attorney j general during the preater part of the j Hampton regime. Special reference ' was made to the mother of Lee and the I graces of character he inherited from i her. Mrs. Jackson Present. Charlotte. N. C.. Special.? Lee'? birthday was observed here by a large : gathering of Confederate veterans. | Mrs. M. A. Jac kson, widow of the , famous Confederate general. Stonewall Jackson, pinned a bronze medal, known as the cross of honor, on the coat of each veteran. The medals went the gift of the children of Charlotte, j A Tribute From Wolseley. Norfolk. Va.. Special.?At the 11th ! annual "banquet of the Pickett-Buoh- I anan camp Confederate veterans in i honor of the birthday of Robert E. 1 Lee, held at the Atlantic hotel, a letter ' was read that was written by Lord Woiselev. commander of ihe British j army. In ir heclaosed with Washington. as a patriot, and with the greatest soldiers of history as a soldier. The letter was a high tribute to Gen. Lee as a man. soldier and patriot. Wilmington. N. C.. Special.?The Hth anniversary of the birth of Gen. R. U. I^ee was celebrated here with a parade of the principal streets of the city by local military organizations. Camps of Confederate veterans and Sons of Confederate veterans held exercise* in the opera house, which were largely attended by veterans. A collation was afterwards served in the city ^tall by the Daughters of the Confederacy to all survivors of the Civil War and organizations participating in the parade. The banks, produce exchange and other places, suspended business for the day in honor of the occasion. Atlanta. Ga.. special.?tien. i>ee * birthday was appro >riately observed here. By Cable.?The important yeport received from Johannesburg that Dewet has crossed me vaaj ana joined forces with the Transvaal com^ mandoes. if true, probably means the ^ concentration of 7,000 Boers, with sev eral guns, for another big attack. 9 There is a rumor current in Cape Town that several Boer leaders are urging an attack upon the mines. It has long been understood that General Dewet has been anxious to Join the invaders in Cape Colony and this rumor may be spread to cover an attempt to ' break southward. Lawyer Fatally Shot. T>aPorte. Ind.'. Special.?Ellsworth E. Weir, a prominent attorney of this city, was shot and probably fatally injured Sunday night., by Jos. W. Brill, of Cleveland. O. Brill, who had become estranged from his wife, who is well-known here, had been advised that Mrs. Brill had consulted the lawyer with reference ti bringing an action for divorce.
