; its as i n J. C. SCURRY WAS SHOT BY A NKGRO BARBER AT GEORGETOWN. The Afrair Caused Great Excitement and for a Time a Race War was Threatened. Sif iiril.-iv jifti?riiOon. when J. C. Scurry, while discharging his ? duly us depulv sheriff, was shot r and fatal I v wounded bv John ? k Ilrownfield, a negro barber, the town of Georgetown has been in a foment of excitement and in im minent peril of a race riot. The trouble was brought on by Scurry attempting to arrest the negro, i>ro\vii(iei(i, in the latter's shop, upon his refusal to pay delinquent taxes. A dispute arose between the two parties and a scuttle en sued, during which Scurry's pistol dropped lrom his pocket and the negro seized it from the floor and emptied the contents of live chambers into the deputy's body, inflicting wounds from which Scurry died on the following day. Immediately after the shooting the negro attempted to escape, but was capture I by a policeman and lodged in j til. J. C. Scurry died at 10 o'clock Sunday morning. All day Sunday intense excitement prevailed, the negroes forming a mob about the jail to protect lhe murderer and threatening to burn the town. The authorities, feeling that help was needed against the threatened outbreak, telegraphed to Governor Ale-Sweeney lor aid, and on Monday military companies from Sum tor and Charleston were ordered to Georgetown. The presence os the soldiers had a wholesome ellect. At last accounts the riotous negroes had quieted down. Monday morning Josiah Doar, editor of the Georgetown Times, wu- accidentally shot through the knee by one ?l the militiamen. Mr. J. (J.
