Then add a little SCOTT'S EMULSION to his milk three times a day. It is astonishing how fast jj he will improve. The nurses, i , let the mother take the j; Emulsion ! insures success. Then, too. there is a boy for all such positions. . Our orchards ars too much neglected to ligure prominently in fruiting season. The fruit trees and vines are incapable of supplying us with the luscious fruits unless we provide for them first. Trees are too often placed in holes(a wrong practiced hey should be put in deep furrows) and left to sutler I he ravages of insects, parasitic diseases etc ; vet in the spring (more cruel than all) we hopefully contemplate a luxuriant yield of peaches, pears and apples. Fanners, tell your sons that they can do nothing better this month than visit your blighted, torn, or worm-eaten orchard, (or a combination of these and probablv many other enemies) and set it right fcr you. 1 love the orchard (especially the fruit,) and sodo you; then prune off with a sharp knife (preferably a pruning knife) all brbken or surplus limbs, so that the autumn winds may do no further injury. Remove all parts of pear-trees infected with blight two feet below the point ot contact and burn immediately. Pear blight is a bacterial instead of a fungous disease, as formerly thought, and therefore it is futile to spr?y it with any of the remedies yet employed. In case ttie ' .'..1 ilia Kll.rllt I .Vi? u>ru i<u iciiiwviii^ uiw Kfnn*B' be cut into infected parts it should be sterilized by dipping into alcohol or corrosive sublimate before it i* applied to a healthy tree. Spray with Hordeaux mixture tor fungous diseases; with kerosene emulsion for sucking insects, and with paris green for gnawing insects. Cut out at the base with a flexible wire the apple bane, peach girdles, bark beetle and tlie like. Sun-sculd kills many trees, therefore instruct ytfUr son to prune later to prevent this. * * It the orchards are protected and provided for when their juvenile benefactors have reaped years of i;rief and mirth upon their hoary heads, it suffices thera to visit the umit \*at f 3 i f It f it I trpfm nf Vfllllh and then call back the days thai have happy been. AxnoTater. Girl Babies. An Omaha woman bought for $10 a guarantee from thi spirit world that her next child would be a boy. When the child arrived it proved to* be twins and girls- Instead of congratulating herself on the superior good sense and generosity of the spirits the woman had the intermediary in the transaction thrown into jail. There are many women who have this prejudice against gill babies, and an amazing prejudice it is, whether the, matter be looked at from the sentimental, cr, the practical standpoint. Sunday School Picnic. On I he 23 instant we had the | opportunity offered of attending a Sunday School picnic at tins place. We embraced the opportunity, and found it good to be there; there were many things to make one feel glad and to make the occasion enjoyable. In the first place the marked and rapid improvements that are noticeable all a round, wheer once am.l onlv a few ! years since was a wilderness, is; now turned into productive and j well cultivated farms, and where) i once you would find an occasional] cabin, now you find good .and substantial dwellings and other buddings belonging to the farm, next churches and school buildings, and as you wuld naturally suppose a popul*-*m of good, industrious, God fearing and God loving people, noled for their generous hospitality as was clearly demonstrated on .'lie day of this picnic. The table may be said t? have groaned under its bounty of good things placed upon it. At an early hour the buggies and carriages came from tie surrounding country loaded with charming young ladies, smiling, cheerful mammas, with the smaller rosebuds none the less beautilal even though they were sin ill, .md the young men with their Sunday best wtre therein force and gave the politest attention to the ladies. About m'.mvimi n'elnelr sill were invited to the church where they were entertained with music furnished by Miss Isla Bryan, Miss Williams and others until dinner was an-1 nounced when all promptly responded to the sound which calls us all around the festive board, and tiiere were no laggards,?justice wasdono After refreshments, we werelurther entertained br mu?icand wound up by singing, "God be with you till we in jet again". And in closing allow us to ?rx tend our thanks to Mr. and Mrs. W D Bryan and others ot the committee lor kind attention. Se ucx.
