ASSAULT. A Young Lady Near Florence The Victim. Florence, Special.?Miss Gertrude Rhodenkerehen, step-daughier cf J. C. Delecody, superintendent of the National cemetery, was Monday afternoon the victim of a brutal assault with intent to ravish. Her assailants were two brutes of the lowest African type. While the purpose was not accomplished, the young lady is severely injured. A long gash is on her forehead, her throat bears the marks of brutal Angers, and she is prostrated from the shock. Several squads are scouring the country on horseback, in buggies and on foot. The crowd is cool but determined. Neighboring points have been furnished with descriptions ahd everything is being done to apprehend the assailants. The National cemetery is two miles from Florence. Miss Rhodonkerchen was alone, uer father having gone off with the gardener after after water. Two negroes?she thought them farm water, which she gave them. They returned on another pretense, and then for a third time. The young lady grew apprehensive at the third visit. One pretended _.s hand was hurt and asked for a little soda. Wnen given the soda the men asked for a piece of paper, and Mi&s Rhodenkerchen turned to go in and get it. This occurred at the kitchen ..oor. As she turned the blackest of the negroes exclaimed: "You shall never leave this door," Infi. Struck her down with his fist. The brute knelt by her and with his hands at her throat drowned her screams. At the instance of his accomplice, the chief assailant cut a deep gash in the struggling young lady's forehead and rendered her senseless. The brutes then took flight. When she recovered consciousness Mies Rhodenkerchen ran, with the blood streaming from her face, to the house of a negro 400 yards distant. She was taken care of and a physician sent for and the wounds dressed. The Coming Sta(e Fair. Col. Thomas W. Hollcway, the sec retary of the State ta:r society, na.i made tbe following special announcement as to tfie coming State Fair: The 23d annual South Carolina State Fair will be held in Columbia from Monday, October 29th, to Friday, November 2d, inclusive. Entries are absolutely free, and all premiums regularly awarded are paid in full. No part of the premium money is retained by tfie society on any account or pretext whatever. But there were only homesteads for eight, so the difficulty was overcome by placing in a hat sixty-nine names, sixty-one of which were blanks. An Indian boy drew from the hat as the names of the applicants wore called out, and in this way the eight capit.! prizes were drawn.
