* Now He Is Full of Regrets. I.owrie ? Nature often throws out warning signals, which we to our loss neglect. Buttle?I shouldn't wonder hut you're right. I.owrie? 1 met my wife in a thunderstorm. danced with her for the tirst time at a house that was burned down, and married her in a killing frost. Buttle?Yes? I.owrie?Yes. And I hadn't the sense to read the signs.?Brooklyn Life. Wigg?"They say the cycling craze , is over." Wagg?"Yes. the fellow who takes his girl out on a tandem must j P take a hack seat." Thus th.? natives are uow to partiei- ' pate, for tin- lirst time ou a large scale, iu work that is related to the war. The Basutos, have no friendly seutirueuts for the Orange Free State Boers who incorporated in their republic a part of Basutoland. The Zulus have always hated the Transvaal Boers. t with whom they had many a hard tight in what is now Natal, and by whom the Matabele braueh of the Zulus were driven north of the Crocodile River. The Basutos and Zulus are the strongest native elements in South Africa. These tribes supply a large part of the manual labor throughout South Africa, but their ellicieney falls below that of I the average American negro. Tiiey have not reached the same plain' of civiliation, tlu-ir wants are fewer and more easily supplied, and after a term of service they usually wish to return to their homes for a long period of idleness; so it has been found necessary to supplement them by the importation of thousands of Indian eoolies. Still, they are by far the largest element in ihe labor market. Sixty thousand of them were at work in the Wit watersraud gold fields when the war began; all the labor in the diamond mines is supplied by the natives, and they are widely scattered at service through the towns and over the sheep and cattle farms. They are prisoners as long as they work in the diamond mines, for one of the rigorous measures taken to prevent ie tn kcon the native UI<<U1UU<1 aittuu-s --J laborers in a compound from which they never emerge during their tenn of service, except to march, under escort, to and from their work. But the South ' African natives are progressing, ant their value as a factor in the develop inent of the laud is growing. Some people insist upon hidingtheir light under a bushel when a thimble would be quite large enough for the purpose. The average toy makers in Saxony makes about one cent an hour. A Very Interesting Sight. Anyone riding along the Seaboard Air Line, on the Georgia division, can ^ see a very interesting sight as they 2 go southward, on the right hand side of the road in the northern part ot Auburn?a side walk for a half mile, that is bordered with beautiful lilies. This is the work of our Industrial c Agent. Mrs. J. C. Hawthorne. She a has planted these lilies along the side walk from her home to within a short distance of the S. A. L. depot. She does not seem to think she has done very much towards beautifying her town, and is constantly planning f something she can do to make a re- j cord for herself. Mrs. Hawthorne is a a very quiet, unassuming lady, but she 0 and her good husband have taken so * much interest in the industrial work being done on the S. A. L., that neither of them have missed a single meet- n ing of the Industrial Agents, and al- u though they are backward in saying what they have accomplished, yet they, with other Industrial Agents. ?* have done a great deal to assist in ^ making a record for the S. A. L that has caused it to be known all over the country as the most progressive rail- tj road line in the way of development and beautifying its territory. d tl e Mad Faiib in Her Pappy, "Keep liiin." said the head of the i, house, indignantly, to the man who li brought back the lost dog.
