IJow The.v Arc Taught to Stand Stll Where Their Klder* Leave Them. Au Englishman now in Baltimore who spent several years among the Boers in South Africa said recently that the Boer force was stronger in numbers thau it seemed to be, because every mau in the army was mounted and detachments could move from one point to another in an incredibly short time. Ho was asked whether the Boers kept their horses in the trenches with them, and this question led to an explanation. "Every Boer warrior has a horse," said he, "and their horses are so trained that they will stand where until tlioii- moainr's rf> I kUC* Uiu tun uuiik buv?4 .. . w tarn. I Lave seen thein training their horses in this trick and their method is effective, though heroic. "A Bo.er will take' a young horse, a two-year-old or perhaps a yearling, and attach a halter to him. Froui the hater hangs a ropo and at the-end of the rope is suspended an iron ball, which hangs about the animal's knees. "The horse is then turned loose in a large lot. He immediately begins to prance around and the iron ball keeps striking against his knees. Tho horso is driven wild and the ball I keeps on gettiug in-its work. Tho j beast may struggle against the annoy. , auce and pain for four or live hours, ; but he finally drops from exhaustion. "Often it takes three or four weeks ! to nurse the horse, with his cut, I bruised and bleeding knees, back iui to condition, but when he is fit to j ride he is just the horse the Boer ; wants. All the Boer has to do when : he dismounts is to throw the bridle ! rein over the horse's head. The hots J ' feels the reigns hangiug from his chin and he remembers the previous experience with an iron ball. lie will staud stock still ae loug as that rein haugs from the bit and he will not move, not if shells are bursting around him and if the crash of artillery if but a few feet away. wisp wnnns. A (iRF.AT TRUCK GARDF* Mexica May Supply Is with Our Early Vegetables. From recent developments it Is apparent that the Southern States will not possess the monopoly of supplying , northern eities xvith garden products, says the Philadelphia lieeord. The science of refrigeration and the construction of refrigerator ships and r<* frigerator cars has reached such a-high state that it is now possible to raise fruit, it might be said, in almost any part of the world, and carry it to any I otiier nart. The fact has been for years demonstrated by the shipment of carcasses from Australia to England by the shiploatj, where an enonuous trade has been built up. The shme principle ean be applied to'the- transportation of fruits. A very large proportion of the product of California is now shipped east ward'in refrigerator ears, and sotuc of the tinest fruits on display in the East gome from that State in this way. The agriculturists in the South have.recently had their attention directed to the advisability of diversifying crops by the high price paid for garden produets. The market garden has of 'ate years become a very important factor in southern agrietiltural economy. Enterprising capitalists, since the development of Mexico by railroads have been looking at the possibilities of climate there, and have taken steps in J some cases to establish plantations for ! the growth of fruits on n large Scale, which it is their intention to ship by refrigerator processes- to United, States ports and then to inland points. The schemes read well, and apparently are ! well based. There appears to be no | reason why garden truck could not be i raised in Mexico and delivered safely | and profitably to :t great many cities I and towns throughout the United States. A great many products there are four to eight weeks ahead of the South. Dairy fanning has become very profitable. Milk in large cities sells at 25 cents in Mexico; butter at :'?<> to 48 cents a pound. l.alK?r costs only from 1- to 25 cents a day.
