IIott They Increase the Total of Fertilizing Material In the Soil. That logiminons crops are not only conaamfrs of available plant foods, but that they actoally manufacture the most valaablo and most essential nitrogeuons compounds, using the free gaseous nitrogen of the air, has been established by the researches of modern agricultural chemists. ITotv tbo process is accomplished is plainly explained in a paper on leguminous forage crops by .Tared G. Smith, assistant agrostologist cr tuo department or agncuiiuru: This transformation cf an inert gas takes place through tba agency of minute, almost infinitesimal bacteria, that live within the tissaes cf tho roots cf piaut3 of thid order, producing kactlike swellings or galls upon them. Each variety of legume has it3 own peculiar bacterium, on whose presence it i3 dependent, and unless its particular spacies of bacterium comes in contact with and infests the roots, tho plant cannot got more nitrogen than could b3 wonnmrl llt> Mm rents C.f 3 iTQSfl Cf tobQC co plant. It can then cc!y take up each nitrogen as is already present in the soil in available cr solnblo form. If these bactena nro entirely absent from tho soil, tbo clover cr beau will not fully develop unless an abundance of ioluble nitrctc3 is present. This wonderful dependence of plants of tha clover family-upon the miunto bacteria which Jivo within the root tissues offers an explanation of tho failuro of such crops when tried upon soils not previously (levotad to their cultivation. It has been found by experiment in this conntrvand abroad that such new legu miueus crops may he successfully cr.ltivated by inoculating the land either with artificial preparations or cultures containing these germs, cr with soil from a fluid where this crop has been, previously grown. Good results are also sometimes secured by treating the seed preliminary to sowing. By such an inoculation-tbo yield of total dry matter has been increased sometimes from tenfold to rhirtyfold. Moreover, it is found that thcro nra no gall tubercles formed on the roots of leguminous crops when tboso nitrogen bacte-ria aro not present in a soil, and henco there can then bo no utilization of gaseous atmospheric) uitrcgcn by then. Nitrogen is the most important plant f^rrl If- iu mnst r-Tnorisivn fertilizer when purchased in artificial manures. It is also tho most necessary element cf animal foods, for when it is entirely absent, or present in insufficient quantities, thero can bo neither growth nor tho complete repair of wornont tissne. Hence it can readily be understood why the abundant cultivation of leguminous crops is so necessary. The legumes are the only crops which will, when plowed J under, increase the total of fertilizing materials of ..the ppil. ... .. i Notice of Discharge. trice is hereby pi ven that on tlsc 27tli of -January 1000,1 will apply -t<>~ judge of Probate of Wiliiamsburh County, for a final discharge as .Administratrix of the Estate Dan let Chandler deceased, Ci E.
