Accompanying fhe cuts was ; a very readable article on "Obiss: Lite at Furiiian," by Rev. V. 1 Masters, the financial agent of the -university. THE NEWS AND ADVERTISER. THE PROJECTED RAILROAD. There is much talk about the building of a railroad from Florence to Georgetowu in the near future, and 'from what we can hear in a general way there is more than mere talk in the rumor. Such a road, on an air line, would seem to strike about Docks, Rhcms, Black Mingo and Rollins, cutting o trtuMrnlor in Hi** a ukiii^UIUI r\ v? IVII North eastern part of this county. We are glad to he?r this talk of an additional railroad in the county. We are in for anything in the way of progress that can be of benefit to our people, and we believe this railroafl would be a benefit. It seems to ns, however, that the proper line for the road would be from Cades to Georgetown. By this route, about twice as much of the county would derive advantage from it, and the cost of grading would be much less, as the old road bed might be used. If the road is built, however, we will not quarrel over the route. Either way would be a great help to people who have never enjoyed the conveniences of a railroad. It is only a question of time when this road will be constructed ? and we hope the time is near at hand. ___________ ! THE STATE FAIR. Give better premiums to get better exhibits. People go to the ; Fair to see something, and are naturally disappointed when the ' exhibits are poor, as was the case last week. And, above all, we I would suggest that by the next Fair, arrangements be made lor l the better accommodation of its t patrons in the way of board and lodgings. TRUCK GROWING. As the time approaches when the old year is drawing to a close ? ? ? ? i l and the advent 01 another seeuliuie is near at hand, the mind of the farmer nat urailv turns towards the question of wliat can he most profitably produced on his lands. ( A few years ago a good many of our farmers turned their attention toward tobacco culture,and it was thought that at last there was an avenue of escape from the thraldom of King Cotton. Experience has demonstrated the fact that only a certain class of our lands will produce tobacco profitably; and although many farmers have grown it successfully, others, on account of unsuitable soil, improper curing or mismanagement in some way, have become discourj aged and are more devoted slaves of cotton than ever. No argument is needed to convince the farmer that he who sticks to cotton exclusively will go from i bad to worse. Now the problem is, what can be profitably raised in this county; and its solution, we think, lies in the growing of fruit and vegetables for market. There is scarcely a loot of arable land in the county that will not, with proper at ten lion, make a lair yield o 1 vegelab ies. Small fruits liourish in a soil and climate the finest in the | world, many growing wild in the | woods and fields. Only a few acres will produce an abundance, and the expense invoh e 1 is much less than that required in raising cotton. i many 01 our people nave recog nized the advantage of truck-growing over cotton farming, and have aiready gone into that business. By that means hundreds ol dollars were brought into the county last year, and at a time, too, when llie average cotton farmer having spent all of his money on his half grown crop, couU scsroely raise hi* wherewithal to boy a pus'age 'amp.
