" At thw time it looks as if the cessation ol hostilities with Spaii is a matter of only a few days Terms of peace have been oilerad t< Spain at ner own soucnauon am. an answer is expected very short ]y. This means that the Spamsli pow^r shall be forever ended ii the western hemisphere, that Tor to Rico shall be ours, and that wc i are to have coaling stations in tin Philippine Islands. The disposi tion of these islands is as yet tin determined, and is one of a good many puzzling questions to bt settled by the United States Gov l T.. i.: 'eminent. ctcit imug m consideration, the conditions ol peace offered to Spain are rathej light?more so, some may think 4han she derserves. We think however that the United States i; in o position .to be magnamimous. After a brilliant series of uninter rupted successes in a campaign ol . * three months, with comparatively Jittle loss, our government can afford to do lite handsome tiling in Yesponding to Spain's overture! of peace. The golden rule applies to nations as well as to individuals, and in the present condition oi .Spain's finances it would be hard to demand a heavy iiideuiity from her. Her fleets destroyed, her armies shattered and her credit gone, what more piteous spetacleof humiliated pride could wo w ish? The objects of the war have been accom plished aMd there seems to be no just cause for prolonging the strife. _______ A GOOD MAN SLANDERED. The scurrilous attack upon Dr. John (J Kilgoby Mr. Walter Olark seems to be utterly unwarranted, and can only be explained by the presumption that Mr. Clark has allowed his Populistic phantasms <o becloud his intellect. The whole incident sounds like the f foolish vaponngs of a crank, who is anxious to figure in some kind t v of sensation, even at the expense of another man's character. We iiave no Joubt that Dr. Kilgo will * i beable to utterly put to rout this i. -slanderer, and come forth the true -and honorable servant of God that South Carolinians know him to be. Such senseless slanders will but strengthen- th'e character they would besmirch and recoil upon the head of their author. A RESTING SPELL.
