Regular Weekly Letter From a County Record Correspondent. We are having quite a cool snap Mrs. W. H. Scott, who has been confined to her room several weeks by sickness, is still very low. Misses Lula and Mannie Byrd have returned home from an extended visit to relatives and friends at Ebenezer. Mr. J. B. Files, who is here painting Mr. Winslow Wright's house, spent Sunday with his family at Trio The fishing season having arrived our local angiers nave equippcu themselves and will now turn their attention to the finDy tribe. The Bethlehem Union will meet with Scr&nton Baptis church on Friday before the fifth Sunday in this Month. We hope there will be a full representation of all the churches. Our citizens will be glad to entertain the brethern. There are several pretty flower gardens in town. That of the Misses Graham's deserves special mention. They have quite a varity, and at this time when the flowers are all in full bloom, their garden present a lovely scent, Mr. Justice C Jones, who left here about four years ago to enlist in the United State army, at Atlanta, has served out his term and is now pleasantly situated at Roanoke, V A Dr. Covingion Lee, formerly of this place but late of Bishopville. has located at his father's placb a bout six miles out in the country to practice his profession. The Doctor had the misfortune to lose his drng store and stock of drugs by the recent fire at Bishopvilie. Rev. A. 8. Willeford was in town a few days ago selling the Columbian Cyclopedia. He succeeded in making a few sales while here. Mrs Whitehead and Miss Hattie Sanders visited in Lake City Sunday. Madame Rumor says Cupid has been waginng quite a lively campaign in our county metropolis this season, and as a result that quite little burg will soon be enlivened by the swee chirttes of wedding bell. The public school at this place under the management of Mr. J. W Nelson, will close shortly, but our citizerns havedeternined to continue the school until the completion of the full term. Mr.Nelson will remain witn us as principal, ana we full confident the school will contiuue to prosper un'def his efficient management He has done r great deal for the Education of the youth our town during the two years he has taught here, and we think he very deservedly merits the "well done" of all onr people. We have read with gi'eat interest the programe to be observed by our friends of Kingstree on "Memorial Hay." In the language of another, we owe to ourselves, as well as to the dead, this duty, for monuments and memorial days declare the patriotism of the living no less than the virtures of those whom they commemorate. - <A*f> * - ~ r " *The town council has had the shade trees on the streets trimmed ; up. He is constructing a machine which he claims will demonstrate the fact when it is eompfetea. Section Foreman, Johnson will soon commence taking up the track now being used on the Northeastern Kailroad and replacing it with heavier and more substntial i1 railing. Tuis work has aiready been completed from Charleston . up to Salters, and the compai^ , proposes extending it on to Flurence this Spring. The picnic season is here and i already we hear of picnics, etc. We are told that the Baptist Sunday school propose having one I shortly at Cock field's mill Which will be the event of the season. Mr. Fore, of the firm of Fore & Foster, lumber dealers, Wilmington came down a few days ago and placed an order for 250,000 feet of fine lumber with Messrs. Nachman Bros. of this place. Mr. Fore says the lumber produced in the belt is of a very superior qu:dity and he prefers having his order's filled by the mills in this section. We understand that Mr.S.Evans contemplates erecting a steam saw and grist mill at this place in thtf course of a few week's. He will also put in a cotton gin in time fof the fall crop. This w U1 add another industry to our town which will conduce to the material growth and upbuilding of the place. We welcome all such enterprises and hope the near future will produce still greater developments along industrial lines. The next thing to be done is the establishment of a telephone line from here to Lake City, and why not extend it on to Kingstrce? We have no telegraph office here and we are always behind in getting the news. We want to keep up with the outside world and we think telephonic communication with other places would do a great deal to change our 1 elation. Rev. J. J. Baggett has a patch of corn that is tassling out This is the earliest we have ever heard of, and we doubt very much if anyone else in the State has corn so forward as this. C. RELATING TO CONVICTS A Portion of the County Government Law Published by Request The supervisor has requested us to publish the lollowing extract from the county govnermetft law, for the benefit of the magistrates: "Section 662, That on and after the passage of this act all the courts ot this State and municipal authorities which under existing laws have power to sentence convicts to comfinement in prison with hard labor shall sentence all aoieooaiea maie convicts 10 hard labor upon the public works of the county in which said person shall have been convicted, and in the alternative to imprisonment in the county jaril or State penitentiary at hard labor: Provided, that no convict whose sentence shall be for a period longer than three years shall be so sentenced." Governor Fllerbe on Monday offered a reward of one hundred dollars for the arrest and convict ion of the murderers, a copy of his proclamation appearing as an advertisement in another column. The governor would have offered a reward sooner, it is said, but for the fact that up to last Friday no less than nine men had been arrested for the crime, and, until then, he had received no off ciail request for the reward.
