Company, ordered three hundred copies of last week's issu'? of the Democrat con taining the accotuiL of the test trial of the steamer "Uucle Joe," sohl by this company to the Young Americas. These papers arc intended for distri bution throughout the country as ad vertisement. On last Sunday there was a severe hail storm in the neighborhood ol Mr. A. M. Innbinct of middle Town ship. The largest of the stones were about Lhe size; of a fowl's egg. On Monday hail fell plentifully in the Fork and on Tuesday night also, in the town and the sections between hero and Branchvillo. So far, we have heard of little or no, damage from these frequent hail storms, any where in the county. Mic. John ItasL, of St. Matthews, wore a vest in town one, day last week which ho purchased from Mes srs. Bull & Scoville two or three years before tho war, Tho vest does not seem to have Buffered from age, and looks as good as now, though not specially favored. This speaks well either for Mr. Bast's care or for Messrs. Bull & Scovillo'a goods. It was thought by some of her friends that tho woman was poisoned, but a post mortem ex amination revealed tho fact that death was from natural causes. It is said that the pastor of the M. E. Izlan ad dressed a few chaste and eloquent re* marks,' full of encouragement to the firemen ; and then proceeded to bap tize the pet in the name of tho entire fire department by breaking a bottle of wine upon the wheels and to pro nouncr the name of "Uncle doc" in the prcsencr of the assembled citizens. About sunset the i steamer was rolled into her quarters and thus ended a pleasant evening to the citizens of the town. Between 11 and 12 o'clock Satur day night last the alarm of lire was given and everybody rushed toward Tue residence of Mr. T. hlobn, in whose yard the lire was burning. The steamer was immediately taken from ' the house and placed in position at j tho well for work. Some little dis cussion arose OS to the propriety of kindling lire before Hie steamer had been received, which was happily j stopped by the timely arrival of Mr, Teller, the agent arid engineer, who at once kindled the lire. By this lime the fire had spread from the stables where it originated to the kitchen and other buildings in the yard and was already impinging it self upon the south end of the dwel ling and threatened it? complete do structioh. Chief Dibble at once com prehended the situation and ordered the Water lo be thrown on the end and lop of tho'burning building, and by the aid of the Hook aud Ladder Company succeeded in preventing the Ilaines from making further progress. The wind at times blew strongly to the North carrying burning cinders for several hundred yards and falling upon the lops of neighboring houses, threatening their destruction loo. Too much praise cannot bo awarded the entire lire department. The Young Amciicas for their faithful labor at thu engine and hose; lhc I Took and Ladder Company for their nobie efforts and tiering on the top of the burning building ; to tho color ed company foV their willing and ready aid wlt2ii ever it was needed ; and lo Iho citizens got.orally, white and colored, for the active part taken by every one to save lhc dwelling.
