J We believe in education, but unless the mental training is accompanied by the inculcation of pure morality, it becomes a source of danger to gooi government; for it is the educate! man, with a dwarfed moral nature who is nearly always the leader m any movement that tends towardt socialism or anarchy. Some weeks ago we called atten tion to the .enterprise of the New and Courier in hotel building, an* mentioned the fact '.hat it had erect ed a fine row of them, built of paper on the battery of Charleston. Om Columbia contemporaries show hi equal amount of enterprise iu erect iug cotton factories on the canal am big banks on Main street. We sin cerely trust that they will all materi ftlize at an early day. W# hare no special choice, with cue or two exceptions, as to whi shall get the Federal officts in Boutl; Catalina, so the recipients "oniu-n ate competent to discharge the dutie; of their respective positions, and an good Democrats, but we sincere!) trust that the president will not maki the mistake of giving any recognition to thoeo who are at heart adherents of Third Party and only call them Hives Democrati, with the hope o) scouring eomc benefit thereby, li these men are to be rewarded, then Uen* Weaver might turn up us an applicant for something. We haVe never witnessed a more Utter fad lii'o tljiift the attempt oi sente of the prohibitionists to show how they can sunnoft the dispensary law and at the sume time be con sistent in their rtdvopary of prohibi- ton, One of the moit striking in- etahcee of how Utterly nbknablt- their {AHitimi is has been fnruishec by Rev. B. Li Stokes, of Cbariestoi in his controversy with the editor oi the Newberry Observer in Which the minister was completely demolish! u by Wallwoe, Mr, (Stokes’ fate shouin be a Warning touchers who attempt \) bolster up tkif monstrosity. Home weeks ago there Was quite » whsaUun created by the publication of u card ill the Columbia Itegistei in which it WUs stated that a Methe* dUt minister aud his wife had been Mwn insane by th« lack of suitable food; in the sume Issue of the Reg ister theft;appeared an editorial which Very grossly ajisrepresenwd tht bknrch which, to say the least, was both slanderous aud false. Tin whole matter, iu .reference to tin charge that this minister had been starved into insanity was shown to be groundless, by those who were iu a position to know ihe real facts ol the OMe, Of course the editorial ct the Register pr Jvoked a great deal oi indignation, end the Southern Ghrie- tian Advocate was very severe in iu strictness on the offending newspaper, ‘fitt Register promptly disclaimer gny intention of misrepresenting liu Church and tendered ftiKilogies foi the publication of the editorial. While the article was well nigh inex cusable, the apology, several tinu-t repeated, about everyj thing that Could be done, and ought to havi been accepted, The Advocate, h seems, Could not be appeased aud it Still keeping up the tight to which, of course, the Register retorts iu kind, In this both have b«eu at fault, but while the Register fur nished the .occasion for the controver sy, it must confessed that the Advo cate has pressed the matter to u point to which it should uot have gone, aud its editor has given an ex- nibitiou of temper that is very i-ep- rebensible in one occupying the posi tion that he does. Dr, Kirkland is ft very tine writer and a man of stnaiug ability but seemiug unubih \y to keep his temper in a controver ty fenders him Qtuit to be at the halm of a church organ. He evi* dvutl/ does not believe in "rhe soft tion, which has culminated in the suspension of some of the students and a reprimand to the others en gaged in it is unfortunate, especially at this critical juncture, when, owing to circumstances unnecessary to men tion, the attendance at the college has become eomparativly small. In all innocent amusements, even when it unintentionally degenerates into mischief, we haven great feeling of sympahy for young folks and. think it decidedly unfair to judge them by the same rules that would apply to older folks under similar conditions, but while saying this we fully recog nize the fact that discipline must be preserved as witqout the adoption and enforcement of wise laws no in stitution of learning can carry on its work with any degree of efficiency, it would be only a question of time when a species of anarchy would lake the plao of law and order. Being unacquainted with all the faces of the case, it is impossible for us to puss judgment on the action if tile faerrfty, or to my tknfc the sentence passed on the students was severe; but even if it be admitted that the faculty was unduly harsh, aud their inllietion of their punish ment entirely < ut of proportion to the gravity of the offence, the action if the citizens of Columbia, while- very highly commendable in intent, m making such strenuous effort to .uduce the president to withdraw .rom his position, was a mistake, und me that will give rise to complica- ..ioiui in the future. The main point which we wish to make, in speaking of this trouble,it bhac the general and rapidly growing imposition on the part of the pub lic to let sympathy get ahead oi judgment and thereby interfere with the execution of the law, is in the highest degree congerwe and should be stepped. It matters very little us to what is t he nature of tln- jffence, whether great or small, it is jompaiativcly easy to work up the public sentiment to the foolishly sympathetic point of trying to shield cue offender from the punishment which he hai brought upon him- ielf by the commit!ul of tile crime, flic complaint is often made, and lustly too, that our laws against jriiuw and misdemeanors are uot en forced, yet tfbon the machinery oi the law is put into .notion atU .jus tice meted out to those who have violated its mandate*, it often hap pens with strange inconsistency, that die very people who have been loud est in the denunciations of juries who fail to do their duty, are the ones who work the hardest to secure the offender from the consequences of his own acts, The evil rei ultiug from this is two fold iu its character; Jrst that the interference with the punishment oi those who have viola ted the law, thereby opening the door for simalar violations, aud second on showing our lank of faith in the ability and fairness of oui courts of law. The sooner we cease interfering with the execution of the iaws, the belter it yvill bo for society .it large, for as long as this sentiment prevoi Is we may look for people who feel wronged to take the law into their own hand*. ssr—-rv 1 ”.-.’*?
