Mr. Childs’ address will make
some of his prohibition fiicndsfeel
pretty slim when they read it care
fully. ■
If the State dispenser is a temper
ate man, how can he select his
whisky?. He can’t drink it and will
have 'o buy it on the guarantee of
the selle.v
We hope in a future issue to have
an article from the pen of an advo
cate of female suffrage, as we are
anxious to present both sides of this
us well as all other questions.
We will have to claim the in
dulgence of our readers again this
week for issuing u small sheet, hut
every thing will .be in trim for the
I'ext weeks’ issue, and we can prom
ise them a good paper.
Somebody has nominated the edi
tor of the Abbeville Medium for
State dispense.', ami while we have
nothing whatever to say against his
claims, we believe that Mr. John
Gray Evans received the first nomi
nation.
Manning Times: Some of the news
papers in the State have gone into
convulsions over the speech of Con
gressman McLttUrin. They seem to
thing it wrong for a representative
ilf this Slate to give a truthful ue-
boniit of South Carolina’s political
htsioH.
It id very possible that Mr. iic-
Lttilkih may have thought he was
telling thti truth, but if he would
read up a littlfi lit the political his
tory of the Stale, he will find ttiat he
has a great deal to learn in this di
rection. There was no State in the
Union that was better governed pre
vious to the war than South Caro
lina, and even if we grant, for the
lake of argument! that the majority
were governed by the minority, it
wai simply a rule based on the in
telligence and high character, and
which ran through a long term of
years without the least suspicion of
dishonor attached to it. If the udi*
to? of the Times will divest himself
of prejudice he will be forced to
acknowledge the truth of what we
toy. _
Senator Du tier voted agaiust the
itnti-optidn bill and Seuater Irby for
It. So it seems that in this matter
Senator liutler is helping those who
prey Upon the industries of the peo
ple and Senator Irby is helping 'o
rid the people of these pens. While
Inch Is the conduct of these two
lettiiluts he it known that the Free
man Is ready with commendation for
Irby ahd condemnation of Butler.—
Sumter Freeman.
The comdemnation of our con-
tiHipornry won’t hurt Senator But-
ler, but it ii otttrageotisly itujitstund
undeserved, and is simply the utter-
uhee of a newspaper that is noted
for its erratic course in politics uud
on social quest) imt.
Senator Butler has done more for
the people of South Carolina than
hie colleague will do if he lives to
be as old ue Methuselah. Even If
we differed from General Butler we
wotfld itill ad,niie his courage in
voting according to his convictions,
without considering whether It suit
ed the views of other people or not.
To be perfectly candid, we think
that bfl lomwi more about the sub
ject under discussion than either
Senator irbv or the editor of the
Ituam
