If thou ehoald'et feel Thy loneliness too hard a load to bear. And that another oohld thy wound anneal With gentle tenderness and loving care. My spirit hovering near thee would not abide. E'en should’st thou smile on a beloved bride— When I am deadl 1 * I only ask she be not like to me— As I was dark, let her be fresh and fair; Ir stead of brown locks waving wild and free. Close to her bead obll round the golden hair; And may she tower stately, grand and tail; I shall not mind that I was frail and small— When I am deadl So that she come not nestling to thy side. Nor climb npto the level of thy heart. And lavish kissce without stint or pride, . Or beg sweep pity for some pain or smart. As I was wont—nor Love's exprssslon crave To be, as 1, Love's gladly fettered slave— When I am deadl Nay, love her as thon wilt, and at she will. With fullest meed, and with a conscience clear, E'en though thy memory hold my memory still. In quiet corner garnered, close and dear. If a true heart should give thee of Its best. As I did once, I shall the happier rest— When 1 am deadl —Anne Patchett Martin in Temple Bar. iii De troit has a beautiful little girl about 5 years olil. Drinking from the LoTing Cap* Every prosperous club has its loving cup, but bow many of the guests who see it gracing the banquet know its origin or the gracefni ceremonial which should be observed in drinking from it? The cap should have two handles and a cover, and is handed to the principal guest as the toasts begin. The gnest takes it by both handles, and standing turns to the person nearest, who also stands, and both bow. Then, while the second gnest removes the lid, the first one drinks, and with another how passes the cup to his neighbor, who replaces the lid and presents it in turn to the next guest, and so the ceremony is re peated. In the old days of chivalry and of treachery, as a man while drinking from the two handled enp was prac tically defenseless, his companion was r equired to remove the cover with his sword band that he might not take ad vantage of the other. It is a very pretty ceremony when gracefully performed.— New York Sun. Id Hawnrden Cattle. Vampires In Galana. When the West Indies were first dis covered hogs were pnt on some of the inlands; these in time increased won derfully, so as to become vast herds, af fording a supply of fresh meat to the mariner sick of the scurvy. In Gniana, however, these animals never became common, bat on the contrary required the greatest of care to preserve them from the vampires. Domestic animals, like man, sleep at night, and here the bats have the advantage of them, while the wild quadrupeds of the forest range and feed at the same time as their san- gninary enemy. Hence it has followed that peccaries roam securely and are quite free from the vampires, while their domesticated cousins must be housed and caged.—Longman’s Magazine. Shocked Over the Wire.
