In the oldest time Church services were so long—prayers, hymns and termons—that it is no wonder that many of the hard worked people in the congregations could not ' keep awake. Both in the Old World and in the new various devices were re sorted to for the purpose of banish ing sleep from the Church. Among these was not the modern one of making the services short and in- tereerfling. Our English fathers.tried several methods of breaking np the offensive practice. One method was that known as “bobbing,” a terra thus explained by a writer in Notes and Queries: “My mol her can remember Betty Finch, a very masculine sort of a woman, being the ‘bobber’ at Holy ’iVlnty Church In the year 1810. Mile walked very majestically along the aisles during divine service urn,* el With a great, long stick like a fishing rod, which bad a bob fasten- e.t to the end of it, and when she caught any sleeping or talking they got a ‘nudge.” Dr.Thirwall, Bishop of SL Ua' id’s, give in on of his “Letters” an amusing account of a Kerry custom for awakening sleepers in Church: “It is by ancient custom a part of the sexton’s duty to perambulate the Church during the service time, with a bell in his hand, to look carefully into every pew and whenever he finds anyone dozing to ring the bell. “He discharges his doty, it is said, with great vigilance, intrepidity mid impartiality, and cnns^iuentlT with the happiest effect on the congrega tion, for as everybody is certain that if he or she gives away to drowsiness the fact will be forthwith made known through the Church by a peal which will direct all eyes to the sleeper, the fear of such a visitation is almost always sufficient to keep everyone on the alert.” Children Cry for Pitcher’s Castoria. Of all the mistakes that were ever made since that first and most disas trous blunder in the Garden of Eden, there has never been anything more fraught with mischief and unhappi ness to the human family than a marriage entered into simply because somebody desired it. To marry for such reason alone is a sort of moral- suicide, and those who are guilty of such folly sometimes live to repent it most bitterly and oftentimes die by t heir own hands, because they know of no other way in which to right the wrong they have unwittingly done. It may be questioned whether it is not much more injudicious to urge marriages than to prevent them. In the one ease, the wretchedness may be slower in coming but it is none the less sure and farreaching in its effects. It takes a vast deal of grace for people to live together in harmony the year in 'and the year out, and there must be some natural attraction or something more than somebody’s w him or convenience to keep things even and preserve that unity and sym pathetic consideration that arc abso lutely necessary to make home-life worth the living. Therefore what ever elge you do, never urge a marri age. .Marriage is one of the tilings t hat mnst be desired, and that ar dently, by the contracting parties. No one has a right to interfere, and lo do so is to multiply sorrows for those whose affairs are meddled with hi this way.—New York Ledger. 8teB«gr*rfcer : «i4 : Type-writer, UKOAL AND OTHER COfTING SOLICITED.
