4 Tow Horse That Knows Something*
A Waahington driver says that there
is an old gray hill horse there that some
times cannot get hack to his«oatiatomed
place at the foot of the hill in time for
tbe next car. This horse has nothing to
do.with the blue line, and knows the
difference between the, blue and the
brown care. If he is on his way hack
to the starting point and sees a brawn
car coming, this shrewd animal will
turn around and stand alongside the
track waiting for the car to reach him.
No amount of coaxing can induce him
to move, but after the car reaches him
he will “pull like a major” until he
reaches the top. Then he returns to kii
post, awT when he again sees his err
coming turns and gets into position.
A day or two ago the hill boy, instead
of walking back with the horse or rid
ing him, as was his usual custom,
jumped on a car and rode down. The
horse saw this and stopped half way up
the hill and would not move nntil the
hoy edme after Mm. Whenever tho boy
rides on the car the hone stops half way
down the hill, but when the boy remains
with him the old gray pursues the even
tenor of hip way until he reaches the
bottom.—Our Animal Friends.

WImd Howard Waa Gov*ra*r.
One of the best storiee William
Seward used to tell was of a reception
be had while governor of the state. He
gave it in honor of Millard Fillmore. A
great many people knew neither Seward
nor Fillmore by sight. Fillmore was a
splendid specimen of sturdy manhood,
nearly six feet in height. He stood at
Seward's' left, and the difference be
tween the men waa striking. Of the
throng thpt passed by those who were
not acquainted with either Seward or
Fillmore saluted Fillmore aa governor,
and he turned to Seward and said,
“Why do so many people mistake and
call me governor?"
“Ah,* said Seward, “it is because in
the popular mind there is an instinctive
feeling that a great office should be
filled by a man who is physically great,
as yon are, Fillmore. When people see
me they think some mistake has been
made, and that in some way or other a
hoy has been choeen governor.”—New
York Snn.
