The electric lights vere not dis turbed by Un lightning on Friday night, but shone out brightly through out the whole night. One or two of them were out of order from other causes. The eliciricity invaded the building, but did no damage. In the memory of the oldest in habitants there has never been such a grand and terrible display of elec trieity as there was on Friday night. The Hashes were almost continuous, and the lightning assumed every immaginable shape. It looked as if some giant hand was launching forth. it There will be two tine games of base ball on next Tuerday and Wed nesday June 16th and J7th, between The Darlington Club and The Da vids, of Charleston. There will be fine sport for lovers of national game. Admission: men, 25,:; J.adies; 10c; Boys, 10c. Tickets for sale at Bristow’s Book Store. One of the out buildings at the residence of Mr. W. F. Dargan caught lire on Friday night, just after the storm, and was, with all its contents, (Entirely consumed. The fire was caused by the heavy wind blowing the door open, and scattering some hot ashes over the floor. The house can be replaced for about sixty dol lars. Jim Douglass, a very worthy colored man, who occupied the house, lost everything he had, as nothing was saved from the building. We return thanks for an invita tion to attend a fourth of July cele bration at Cheraw, ;md w ill, if noth ing unforeseen occurs, surely be on hand. The jieopk of this charming and historic old town make a point of observing this day, and it would be well if their patriotic example were followed by every town in the .State. There will be several mili tary companies in the procession, and there will also be a competitive drill and a prize presented to the best drilled company. Can’t the Darling ton Guards secure this prize? As the fourth falls on Saturday, the celebra tion will be on Friday the third. Fifteea Grass in Eight Months. Messrs. C. J. The entertainment given on Thurs day night for the benefit of the Guards was remarkably good, and piet the most sanguine ex]K>ctations pf its managers. The main part of the entertainment was the presenta tion of the “liutledge Guards,” and and it is but just to say that thc charactcrs were all well sustained, and the umatuers won a great deal of praisO from the jnofessional ac- Bince it is now a well-established fact that catarrh is a blood disease, medical men are quite generally j>re- scribiug Ayer’s Sarsaparilla for that most loathsome complaint, and the result, in nearly .every instance, proves the wisdom of their advice. T* the Sunday Sdioll Workers of The State. In obedience to the call of the executive committee of the State Sunday School Association, I again take up the Missionary work of this Association. As its representative, 1 am sent forth to co-operate w ith you in promoting the efficiency of the organizations wherever existing, and in extending the work wherever necessary. Praying for the guidance of the Divine Spirit, I address my self to the task assigned me. I con fidently expect the heariv sympathy, the earnest prayers, and the generous assistance of Christians of every name. The magnitude of the inter ests involved in the Sunday School work of to-day calls for our best ef forts. And now brethren, “to the work.” lit us each in our respective stations, whether pastor, Superintendent, offi cer, teacher or pupil, determine on “More and better work for Jesus.” “Study to show' thyself appproved unto God, a workman that ncedeth not be ashamed.” May God abundantly bless the labors <of his servants, and grant us a mosi prosperous year in all the borders «f our Zion. Terrific Hail Storm. The most destructive hail storm that has ever been known in this part .of the country passed over a jiart of Darlington and Florence Comities on Friday night, and the damage to crops will amount lo a good many thousand dollars. The day had been intensely warm, and about dark the clouds had assumed a very threatening aspect, and very clearly indicated a storm. About ‘J o’clock the. rain commenced falling i» torrents, and the downpour was very steady for about one hour and a half. There was some hail, but not enough to do any damage. The wind also was very high. The centre of the hail storm was from three to four miles below town, and some of our farmers had their crops literally ruined. Mr. D. M. Smoot brought to town a stalk each of corn, cotton and tobacco, and a head of cabbage from his garden. They were literally stripjH'd, and some of the large corn stalks were entirely cu f down by the hail. Some of the stones were fully as large as turkey eggs, and certain ly would have killed any one unfor tunate enough to have been exposed to its fury. Gen. James’s house In s a tin roof and the tju was cut in a number of places by the hail stones. At 12 o’clock the next day the stones were heaped up in the ditches on Mr. l{. B. Nettles’s jdace. The greatest loss will be in tobacco there being j)robably about one hun dred acres destroyeu. Of course it will sprout out again from the stalk, but will be in ferior both in quality and quantity. A good deal of corn will have to be planted over. If the season is good there is time for it to mature before frost. The cotton will also sprout from the stalk, but of course, oven under the most favor- able conditions as to weather etc, will not make more than half a crop. Below we give a partial list of the principal sufferers: Robt. Wilds, Stepney Melver, Clar ence Smoot, J. J. James, W. E. James, O. H. and J. H. Edwards, J. G, Winters, Mrs. S, L. Truluck, D. The morning service is from 11 to 12 o’clock and is devoted to Bible reading, and Mr. Pearson’s familiarity w ith the Bible makes the service both pleasant and profitable. At night there is a song and prayer - service lasling from 8 to half jmst 8 o’clock, after which the regular ser vice begins. Mr. Pearson requsted the people to be prompt in their attendance, and his request has been complied with Ly almost every one. It is very gratifying to jiote that, at his earnest request nearly all the stores have closed from 11 to 12 o’eloek in order that the merchants and clerks might have the opportuni ty of attending the morning service. This closing is all the more commen dable in the merchants when it is remembered that this is court week, and of course necessitates the atten dance of a great many people in town. We will speak more fully of the meeting and its effects in our next issue. Below we give a list of the stores that close for the morning ser vice: Moorhead, Cox & Co., Blackwell Bros., Wilcox & Co., A. J. Broom West & Honour, 8. Tombaeher, (I. O. Mcrtz, J. J. The services were held in the Baptist church, and the seating capacity of the church was taxed to its utmost. The com mittee of arrangements, Messrs. Lide, Parrott and McFall, had everything systematically arranged and the large audience were seated without any confusion. The text in the morning was from the 2nd chapter and 24 verse of the Ejiistle of James, and at night from the <ith chapter and 7tli verse of Galatians. Mr. Pearson is a very pleasant speaker, and Ids style is simple and pointed.
