Darlington enjoyed a rare treat on i Monday and Tuesday nights, in lis- I tening to the music of these gifted I girls, and it is very probable that, J taking it altogether, it Is the best we handle for chills and fever, by Druggists. pronounce it by far the best medicine troupe that has eves visited our town. -Hold i They hud a great variety of musical instruments, and used all of them with skill and delicacy of touch. Where all was so good it is very hard to discriminate, hut the performance on the Harp, an instrument never used in Darlington before, probably attracted the most attention. The ! blending of the different instruments was practically faultless, and it is seldom that one enjoys the opportu nity of hearing such a concord of sweet sounds. In addition to the beautiful instrumental music, there PIANOS & ORGAN*. Hand iu t our Name. We again beg the old subscribers of the paper to come forward and give us their names and date of their [ subscriptions. - The paper will carry out all contracts existing before the fire, hut as the books were hurt we are obliged to call on subscibers to help ns straighten matters up. Moore, Mr. Joseph Meu- chani, of Laurinbnrg N. C. to Miss Our farmers are all busy planting j Theodosia Young, of Darlington, cotton, and it is very probable that by the 20th, almost the entire crop will be planted. It is pretty safe to say that the acreage in this great staple will be fully up to that of last Year. Married, on last Monday night, by Bev. J. G. Ijavv, Miss Janie Floyd, of Darlington, to Mr. M. C. Carroll, of Charleston. For extra good bargains in white and black dress goods, call in at! Broom’s. He don’t mind showing you his goods knowing he can sell you goods at prices that will make you open your eyes with wonder. Joyc & Handers have an advertise ment in to-day’s paper that speaks for itself, and if any one feels dis posed to doubt what they say, a very short inspection of their stock will convince him of his error. Wm. Thomas, the man who mur dered his step-father, Hater Thomas, a few days ago, came in on Sunday night, and delivered himself to the authorities. The murdered man had reproved him for the unkind treat- ineut of his brothers and sisters. He claims it was done in self defence. —'—aLbfith v given % Burk’s Circus gave two exhibitions here last week, and the performances was better than is usually shows of a similar nature. There, were large crowds both day and night, and a good evidence of how well the night show was patron ized, can be found in the fact that it has been reported that only four men could be found on the Square Wednesday bight. All our advertisers are disposing of their goods very rapidly, and the reason is very obvictis, they keep fine goods, and are not t-fraid to spend a little money in order to let folks know what they ha'-e. People who have their wits about them always buy from the stores that advertise, for the simple reason that they keep the best and newest goods. The man who is so lacking in enterprise, us to be afraid to push his business, had better go at something else; for it is very evident that merchandising is not his speciality. We are very glad to announce that our municipal authorities have suc ceeded in their efforts to improve Pearl Street, and it will probably have about nine feet added to it. At present the widening of the Street will only be carried as far us Mrs. Spains corner. When this work is done, South Main Street will be widened as far as Broad. The own ers of property, on either of these streets, should throw no obstacles ip the way of this much needed improve ment, aa the value of the lots will be very much enhanced by the change. Our readers will do well to bear in mind that the Floral Fair will be held in Charleston, somttime this month and avail themselves of the opportunity to visit the city. There are many things in Charleston worth was some very fine singing, and the little ladies had to come out again and again in answer to the loud ap plause. One of the attractive fea tures of the troupe is the illustrations from Japeiiese village life, and this is very real, as the performers are natives of that strange and fur away land. We take :> groat deal of pleas ure in commending this talented musical family to the favorable con sideration of the press and people wherever they go. They give their closing performance to-night, and from here go to Camden. They will appear in Columbia next week, and it would be well if they could he in duced to be there during the Cen- teniul. Syk—- The Electric Lights. , The machinery for the electric lights is being put in place, and the Superintendent informs ns that he hopes to be ready to turn on the lights by the first of May. The whole outlay will be about fifteen thousand dollars for machinery, poles, wire &c. There will be two engines of 25 and 75 horse power, the larger one for the incandescent lights, and the smaller for the arc or street lights. There is one Dynamo of 750 light capacity that will furnish the/ -k-c- tricity for the incandescent lights to be used in stores and houses, and another of 30 light capacity for the arc or street lights. With electric lights and water, works, Darlington will soon be putting on city airs. The Gap Almost Closed. There are only three miles of track to be laid between this place and Sumter, and this will be closed in a few days. When this is accomplish ed the whole force will be put on the line front this place to Beunettsville, and it wont he long before the whole line is completed. Some time ago we suggested that the completion of the road ought to be celebrated in somo fitting way, and we open our columns for any suggestions pertain ing thereto. If this celebration take place, it will furnish a fine op portunity for Marlboro to farmally annex herself to the State, and throw off her allegiance to North Carolina. We would be glad to have the Che- raw Reporter, The Democrat and Argus, of Beunettsville, give their renders the benefit of this suggestion. Death «f Mr. James A. White. We regret to announce the death of this gentleman, which occured on Wednesday last, at 11 o’clock in the morning. He was born on the 8th of December 1842, and was in his forty-ninth year tit the time of his death. Mr. White entered service in the Fall of 61, and remained to the close of the war, performing his duty in every way, and passing through some of the bloodiest fights of the struggle. He was one of the few survivors of the 21st regiment, which it will be remembered was almost annihilated at Fort Fisher. One of his brothers, Mr. E. F. White, was killed at Peters burg, while fighting in a most heroic- manner. The subject of this sketch, in Itis early boyhood became a prin ter and, with the exception of the time spent in service, and a few years after the war in other occupations, followed the business until he was compelled by failing health to give it up. He was a menilier of the Methodist Church, and, except when physically unable to attend, was al- Thoir Places W ill be Hard to Fill. We regret to announce that there is a very strong probability that the. Rev. B. G. Moore, pastor of the Bap tist church in Darlington and the Rev. J. L. Yass, pastor of the Swift Creek Baptist church, will both leave this section, having been called to positions elsewhere. Mr. Moore has been offered n position in the Converse' college of Spartanburg, and lias also been elected Professor of English in the Furman University. Either In stitution will be extremely fortunate if it secures Mr. Moore’s services, for he is, in every way qualified for the. important work of instructing the! young.' He has resided in Darling- j ton for a number of years, and his ability as a preacher is so well known that it is almost useless to speak of it; it being sufficient to say that he is regarded as one of the ablest men in the ministry of the Baptist church ih South Carolina. Rev. J. L. Yass has been elected Superintendent of the Baptist Orph- onage that is to be established at Greenwood, and while his departure from our midst will be universally regretted, it must be admitted that the committee, having this matter in hand, have shown excellent judge ment in selecting Mr. Yass for this important work; for the fact that in an institution of this character, suc cess or failure is in the hands of the man responsible for its management. Mr. Yass has business ability, energy and a large measure of common sense, and if he is sustained by the church, will make an institution that all Baptists may be proud of. He has done a good work in his church and added very much to its strength and influence during his term as pas tor. All our people, irrespective of creed, will wish Jjoth these ministers abundant success in their new fields! of labor. Mr. Mcrtz takes pleasure in announc ing that he has a large eollcetion of choice flowers for sale at his conserva tory, one and a half miles from the Square, ami stands prepared to duplicate the prices of any other crtablishmcnt in the South. He keeps the plants suitable for all the ametuer cultivator, hut If rare varieties are wanted he can supply them in a very short time. The editor has dealt with Mr. Mcrtz for several years, and can testify to his reliability and to the splendid condition of all the plants he sends out. Spjt-iiiH-n Cases. S.
