TIE DAUTON fflEALD W. D. WO0DS, - - - - Editor. ^ABWNGTON, S. C’. AVednesday, March 4, 1891. TUB IKHV. GEORGE W. DARGAM. To-day, March the 4th, will bring Mr. Dargan’s Congressional career to •n close, and it would be well for the country if all of its representatives, ■at the end of their terms could re tire with such an unblemished record; •and carry with them into private life, the consciousness, that he will feel, of duty well performed. He has served for four consecutive terms with credit to himself and fidelity to his constituents; winning the high regard of his party associates, and compeling the respect of his political enemies by his conservative and dig nified course. On every question concerning the public welfare, his voice and vote have ever been on the side of right; and Without consider ing what the consequences might be to himself, has invariably acted ac- ' cording to his convictions. It has 1 happened on a number of occasions that he has voted against his party associates, simply because he prefered principle to party, and the record ' of a patriot to that of a partisan. Of 'course in his official life he has made mistakes, as what public man has not, but no one dare say that, even •when mistaken, he was not actuated • by conscientious motives, and acted • throughout for what he conceived was for the best interests of the i country. In his retirement he will ‘carry with him, the respect and good will, not only of his friends, but also that of those of his constituents, many of whom are his warm personal friends, who most differed with him ‘on questions of public policy, and •all will join in the wish that he may, in the private walks of life, enjoy a large measure of that content, which alone comes from the consciousness ' of duty well performed.
