Miss Ida K. Hinds, an elocutionist of national reputation will give an entertainment on Friday evening the 27th, for the benefit of the Methodist Church. To say nothing of the ob ject of the entertainment, it will be well worth patronizing anyway, and all who attend will be sure of a rare treat. Miss Hinds conies with recommendations from some of the best known people in the country; chief among them being the testimo nial of Gui. John A. Ixigan, who ! during his life was one of the most A Horrrlble Crime Perpetrated in Chesterfield County. A meeting of the County Board of, . . , . C., Feb. 20.—The body of Miss Goodson, a young white wo man, was found in Black Creek, this county, a few days ago. It appears that one day last week Miss Goodson was instructed by her father to carry five hundred dollars from his house in Darlington County to a man in Chesterfield, w hom he owed. As she did not return, search was made for her, with the above re sult. A negro named Alf Green was sus pected of having murdered Miss Goodson. He was tracked to Flor ence, where he was arrested and the money found in his possession. Green was brought to Cheraw last night and taken to the Chesterfield jail.—The State. The ladies of the Darlington Methodist Church, will have a Fair for the benefit of the church some- time in April; and it is only necessary to say that the management of it will be in the same hands that have here tofore gotten up a number of success ful and pleasant entertainments. It will extend over several dnvs so as to hands this is one in which they are justifiable, for it would be almost impossible to conceive of a more bru tal murder, The law should how ever be allowed to take its course, for the simple fact that once it becomes costomary to lynch men who commit crimes of this kind: the same sum mary process will be resorted to when the evidence is entirely circumstan tial. A mob of indignant people cannot give an accused man a fair trial, and this the laws of the State allow to the most brutal and degra- give all an opportunity of being pres- ded erimiuals . Taking all these things into con sideration, we hope that the law will be allowed to take its course in the case of Mary Johnson, and that, the county may be spared the presence of such a woman within its borders. —Cheraw Reporter, 18th, iust. [We most heartily endorse the above, and only wish that this excel lent article could be read by all our people, especially those who arc in the habit of wasting sympathy on hardened murderers. It is very pos sible for a man to kill another in a moment of passion, and be truly sor ry for his act; but deliberate murder, especially in the case of poisoning, belongs to a different category, and it very seldom occurs that the perpe trators penitence is anything more than a sham: It is the issue they repent and not the act; not sorry for the crime itself, but simply regret falling into the hands of the law. There is so much, on the part of silly weak minded people of this misplaced sympathy, that it is time for such excellent articles rs the one in the Reporter. If every paper in the State would take the same position, this petition business would soon come to an end. It is such a rare thing for a jury to do its duty in a murder case, that we ought to be content to let the law take its course when a murderer is convicted. It is most earnestly to lie hoped that Governor Tillman will refuse to interfere. There is no good reason why a wo man who commits, murder should re ceive any more consideration than a man.] Whenever you see a paper full of local advertisements you will sec a town breathing a spirit of enterprise and pluck, which always rebounds to its own interest ladies to make it the best thing of the kind that has ever been seen in ! It is very doubtful if some of our domestic animals have ever received credit for the gumption they un doubtedly have, and a notable ins tance of this is in the case of that extremely useful animal the mule; and the following instance of sagacity on the part of one of the representa tives of this tribe, may be of interest to the readers of the Herald: On Thursday afternoon, one of Mr. Hewitt’s mules, that had in some way, got841 out of the stable, was quietly standing near the corner of L. No damage was done, We understand that a petition lias been iu circulation among the citi zens of the county in order to prevent the hanging of Mary Johnson, who, iu company with D. J. Jacobs, was convicted of the poisining of her husband, William H. Johnson, at the recent term of court. Against such ptitions we must enter our most emphatic protest, for the following reasons: If Mary John son is guilty of the murder of her husband, William 11. Johnson, she should, according to the laws of the country, be hung; if Mary Johnson Dargan caught on fire about supper j could be judged, was complacently watching the crowd on the Square. Who says that a woman has nothing to do? is to lie pardoned, 1). J. Jacobs should of right be treated in the same man ner, and we do not suppose that enough sympathy will be aroused in his favor to save him from the gal lows; and lastly, a bad woman is worse than a bad man, and the for mer is capable of doing more ham to than the latter. We know there is a great deal of sickly sentimentality against hang ing a woman, but we must remember that the safety of the people, who make up a community in which a woman convicted of murder lives, is the Qh.
