Since the above was in type, the Company have exhibited some signs of life, and are putting up the poles to support the wires. Removed tb Darlington Jail. Sheriff Douglas and Deputy W. F. Pate left this morning with W. D. Merriman and D. 3. Jacobs, who were remanded by an order of court to the Darlington jail for safe keep ing. Jacobs went off laughing, re marking that it made no difference where they kept him. The preachers and trial justices ate respectfully asked to send us no tices of all the marriage ceremonies ftrformeu by them. The freight business on the C. • & D, Road continues to be very heavy, and furnishes good proof of the pros perity of our town and county. Any one receiving last week’s Her ald, and is not a subscriber, was amt as a sample copy. If you wish . to subscribe send us your dollar and get the paper for one year. We honestly believe that there is •o place in the State that offers finer opportunities for investment than ’Darlington, and every stranger who visits our town is impnsssed with the bsauty of its location and the enter prise of its citizens. ^ Track laying on tie 0. S. & N. U. ’ B. is still in progress, and it will not be very long before the shriek of the Iscomotive is heard. The work is bring pushed in both directions, and the truck connecting with the C. & Protect Our Dumb Brutes. A colored man was arrested on the Square Saturday afternoon, for cruel ty to his horse. He was beating the animal in a very cruel way, but he was very soon convinced that he could not do this with iinprunity, as he was immediately landed in the guard house. Things of this kind are very common, but they could very eaisly be stopped if the citizens would only co-operate with the town authorities. The police liave orders to arrest all offenders of this kind, and all the citizen has to do, is simply to notify a policeman. A Very Serlaas Naisance. We take the liberty of calling at tention of the county commissioners to the practice of a good many resi dents of the town, of de]K>siting all kinds of trash just on the other side of the creek in Doneraile. It is just beyond the limits of the town and of course the police are powerless, but if it could be arranged to give the umucipal authorities power to stop it the nuisance would soon cease. It is the principal pleasure drive to the ijpring, and every effort ought to be made to keep it in order. The place is not only made very unsightly but dangerous to health. Died. Mr. A. B. Charles, of the Itiverdale neighborhood, died very suddenly on Sunday last He partook of his usu al breakfast and after the meal was finished walked a short distance to call on his physician. Not finding ly, but also dangerous. The Herald reporter will make a tour of inspec tion very soon, and give the location of these obstructions and the names of the parties w ho are responsible for them. Beautify the Town. It would be well if all of onr pro perty owners would show enough public spirit to set out shade trees in front of their residences. It is a very small matter for each individual to put out a few, but it would cost a good deal for the town authorities to do it all; in fact more money than can l>e possibly spared just now from the town treasury. In 18(50, when the place was small and there seemed uo prospect of its being any larger, Maj. .Spain, then the Intendent, wits instrumental in having the Square planted in trees, and it is easy to see how much they help to adorn and beautify it. To his foresight we owe these beautiful trees, and while he has passed away, this evidence of his interest in the town still remains, and while we enjoy their beauty and grateful shade, we ought to hold in rememberaiice the name of the man who had them planted. Those who may wish trees and do not know bow and where to get them, ean get the necessary information by calling at the Herald office. It will be well to remember that when trees are top ped the body ceases to grow, except in, girth and it is better to get those that are very tall and slender, so that when they grow to be large trees the limbs w ill not be too near the ground. ing present. The music was good and added much to the beauty of the services. N. B. The editor is indebeted to a young lady friend for the informa tion contained in the aljove sketch. WAGONS. D. Onr readers will all lx- interested know the location of the electric lights, and we publish the result of the work of the town council iu plac ing the poles. It must be borne in mind that there will be, for the present at least, only sixteen lights, and it is very easy to see how difficult it was to locote them where they would do the most good; and we do not hesitate to say that the work has been well and conscientiously done, and reflects credit on the judgemont of our authorities. It will readily be ad mitted that we ought to have more of them, but the present numitcr is jurt as much us the town cm afford at present. There may be some small changes, but practically the present arrange ment will stand. 'Dm building for supplying the electricity will be loca ted on the town lot It will be JO by 50 feet. Even iron is not entirely imperish able, and slowly and almost imper ceptibly succumbs to the tooth of time; and it would be well for the Water Works Co. to coat their pipes with some substance that will pre serve them from decay until they are placed under the ground. We have been requested to call at tention to the reprehensible practice that some of the stores on Pearl St., indulge ip, of sweeping their trash ont on the street. It ought either to be pat in the back lots or hauled off. As it is the street is vert unsightly. The town authorities dp what they CM to keep the streets in order, but they ought to be assisted in every way by the citizens. Rather tneer Stealing. On last Thursday night, some one entered Dr. Spain’s back yard and palled np several fruit trees and aome grape vines that had been plan ted a few months before. No clue to the perpetrator, but it is hoped that he will not be as successful in cultivating the fruit as he was in aecuring possession of the trees. This kind of stealing is new for Darling ton, but it will he well to keep a sharp lookout both for small fruit trees and flowers. Can Oxford Sausage, Can rlxiire Tripe. West & Honour. One light will probably betaken from Broad St, and put on Grove St. has made arrangements to plant one hundred acres in vegetables for the nse of the Factory. The mere work ing and gathering of such a quantity of vegetables will cost a good deal of money, and besides this, about forty hands will be employed in the Fac tory during the canning season. A great many thousand dollars are sent North every year to pay for canned goods, and if the business is done in our midst, there is just that much more money to circulate at home. Mr. G. W. L ucas, an experienced fanner will manage the farm for Mr. Nettles. More Stealing in Florence. The town of Florence has been suffering from the depredations of a set of very daring thieves, and rob beries are of almost nightly occur rence. The work is evidently done by ametuers, yet they are sharp enough, up to the present time to have eluded the police; and it can very well be immagined that the good people of Florence are somewhat ex cited over the matter, and do not rest very easy at night. One of the stores was robbed on last Thursday night; and while it was just across the street, nearly opposite the jwlice station, nothing was known of it un til next morning. The police may not be to blame, but they come in for a large share of abuse and blame, and some of the citizens critise the Mayor for not reorganizing it Street Obstrnettons. Both the Square and some of the streets are made unsightly and to some extent dangerous by theobstuc- tions placed on them by private par ties and they ought to be removed. There is an old cooking stove on the sidewalk between White’s store and Mrs. Warky’a boarding house, which has been there over a year, and it is a wonder that some one has not been seriously hurt by coining in contact j I’hrist! that whether I conic and see with it. The services at this church last Sunday were unusually interesting and impressive. The sermon both morning and night were preached by the Rev. F. R. Beattie one of the professors in the Theological Semi nary at Columbia. Dr. Beuttie is an earnest and impressive speaker, and preaches with a great deal of force and directness; presenting the truths of Christianity in all their purity and simplicity. He preaches without notes, and in this sets an example that it would be well for all his stu dents to follow. It would be a reva- lation to the sensational preachers of the present day, to hear a sermon from this cultured minister; an able theologian, speaking with such plain ness and simplicity that a child might understand. At the. morning service the communion wus administered. j Below we give a synopsis of the sermons, Iwth morning and night, for which we are indebted lt> the pastor of the church; MORN'IXfl SEKMOX. Last Sunday was a not aide day with the Episcopalians of Florence and the adjoining country, Bring the time set apart for the consociation of their beautiful new church. The building is not large, but is probably the best specimen of church archi tecture iu this part of the State, and the congregation may justly .f«ul some pride in the completion of a work to which they have given a number of years of hard and unre mitting work. The ordinary services «f the Epis copal church are always attractive, but on this occasion they were pecu liarly solemn and impressive on ac count of the service of consecration, when the building was dedicated to the service of God. The follow ing clergymen were inside the chancel and took part in the service: Rt. Rev. W. B. W. Howe, Bishop of the Diocese, Rev. Ellison Capers, 1). 1), Rector of Trinity Church Columbia, Rev. C. C. Pinkney, D. 1). Hector of Grace Church Charleston, Rev. Mr. McBec, from North Carolina, and the Rev. W. A. Guery, Rector of the Church. Dr. Capers preached an interesting and instructive sermon from Philippians 1st Chapter 27 verse.
