near Reeves Landing on the Edisto
river, measuring 5 ft 8.V inches in

New Road.?By an act of the
Legislature, the County Commis
sioners of Orangoburg and Lexing
ton will soon he called upon to have
a new road cut from Keiiiierly's on
the Ninety-Six Road, across the
North Edisto at Slab's landing to
Knott's 51 ill, and thence to H ticca
'bee's Mill in Lexington.
Tea Cultukk.?The lea I arm es
tablished by the Agricultural Bureau
at Summervilleis advancing satis-j
factorily. This demonstrates the;
fact that tea can be cultivated in
South Carolina. Prof. Bihhikov, it
will be remeihherid, tried it with
success in Orangeburg.
The Literary Miciiocosm ?This j
is the name of a now literary paper
just started in New York by Hall &
Co. It is an ably edited paper, the
best thinkers iu the country being

On Tuesday afternoon the target
practice of the Edisto 14ilies, which
was intended for the fourth of July,
came off oh the old field near the riv
er. The target was set at .150 feet
from the ~rlUoro.cn, and the .prize1
shooting resulted as follows: W. L.
Harley, 1st prize, Set gold studs; T.
M. iVlcMiehacl, 2nd prize, Glass Set;
L. J, Izlar, 3rd prize, Chair; T. L.
Wnnuamaker, 4th prize, Box Cigars.
The prize drill was postponed un
til the second Tuesday in October.
The company, as usual, made an ex
cellent show on.parade.
Inks.?We return thanks to Mr.
Kirk Robinson for ? number of cap
sules containing powders for making
ink, each powder being a different
color. The contents of each capsule
arc to to be mixed with a half pint
of rain water, aud the ink is made.
We sire waiting for rain \o make the
experiment, and will publish the re
sults when we have tested the mat
ter. We have tried the same ink
used by .Mr. Robinson, and it ia a
beautiful and cheap article. It is
manufactured by Knowlea and Max
im, Columbus, Gn.
TheMketing at Gkokoe?.?We
learn from Mr. \V\ A. Edwards, the
Secretary, und others who attended
the Sunday School meeting last w eek
at Georges Station; that it was quite
a success. The attendance of dele
gates was large, and the interest man
ifested gratifying. Rev's. Cullino,
Edwards; Snider. McMillan, Moore,
and 01 hers of the e'.'rgy, were present
and participated in the meeting. On
Sunday morning an enthusiastic,
mass meeting of the children was ad
dressed by Key's; Snider and MeMil

a most worthy Scotchman, with wife

Brooklyn, N. Y. to Orangeburg last
week. This excellent family has set
tled on the place of Mr. Vastine
Joiner in the Fork, a few miles from
town. Mr. .Let ham says*, tlrat if he is
successful and pleased, a number of
his friends nnd kinsmen will be sure
to follow hi tu and settle in our midst.
One of his relatives ia now on his wny.
We feel assured that our people will
do all in their power to make the new
comers happy antl satisfied, and we
hope that at the end ttf the year tlu-y
may have reason to be pleased with
their selection of a new home, and
that many others from across the
water, or from lue North may cast
their destiny with them. This is the
