The venerable Dr. Elliott, is among
the excursionists who went to the
mountains on Wednesday. He has
been very feeble for some time, and

Occurred in the Fork on Tuesday
night. The residence and kitchen of
Mr. II. Li. Smouk, just over tho river,
was burned to the ground. We aro
informed that the lire originated from
a fanner of coals and ashes which
was incautiously loll in the piazza,
the wind scattering tho embers. Tho

year of his age. He was buried at
Walnut Ciove Church on the next

Cool Impertinence ?
On Sunday, in the early part of the
evening, while the members of the
household wire seated elsewhere,
.-? me daring thieves put up a ladder
to the rear of Mr. Henry lvohn's
result nee, entered and carried oil
three gallons of w ine, a lot of bread
and rol's, and several cans o f fruit
and jellies, which they took oil' to a
field in the rear, ami had a good time
generally. When they had finished
tin ir feast, a little after bed time,
they had the cool impertinence to
come back and remove the ladder.
On this second visit, one of them
was seen, sitting in the window, by a
y< ung lady in the house.
'Ihe jug containing the wine was
found afterwards in the field in rear
of the house.
Wc hear of no clue leading to their
detection.

Reaches us that somebody, we
don't know who, at some place, w e
don't know where, has put up,
another ticket lor the municipal
offices in opposition to the one put in
the field by the large and harmonious
meeting of tho Democratic citizens
held at tho Engine bouse a week ago.
We are at a loss to know what can
be the object of this movement?un
less it is mischief. There was entiro
unanimity at the Democratic meet
ing, aud therefore Democrats can
have no excuse, for this was tho time
to speak. Besides this the ticket
represents, as near as possible, all tho
varied interests of the town. Tho
fact is Democrats can't go back upon
it, ami wc don't believe they have
any idea of doing it. Democrats
nominated on any other ticket, will
bo expected to decline running upon
it. Wo must and shall elect our
ticket from tin; top to the botto in.
Who Hilled My Deer ?
A rather unusual case in this
?County came up yesterday before
Trial Justice Glover. A gay aud
festive 1 tinting party, having not the
tear of the law nor the dignity of tho
commonwealth be furo their oyes,
went out- on a deer chase in St.
Matthews on the ^oifs^u July, ami
were supposed to have killed a deer.
For this act the whole party was ro

that they knew nothing of the matter.
The jury therefore from want of evi
dence, ui.d by instructions from the
Trial Justice, brought in a verdict of
"Mot Guilty," and the merry hunters
went on their way rejoicing.

"Sister Ruth" fairly brought down
the house.

datory to one so young.
"Ye Skulcmnster," by the children,
was attractive in its simplicity.
"Brother Jacob," by all ye -singers,
was filled with life and full, and will
long be remembered.

Walter, was loudly applauded and
rewarded with Mowers
"John Anderson my Jo," by Miss
Jacobson, was wel I received.
"Juanita," by Dorothy Jenkins,
Miss Lena Jeffords, and Ubcdiah,
brought a profusion of (lowers for the
gentlo singer.
Patience Howe, Miss Buchanan,
rendered "Thou art .so Fair" most
exquisitely, und retired amidst a
floral ovation.
The "Minute Gun at -on." by Mrs.
i John A. Hamilton and her son, was
a musical gem, and most highly ap
preciated as the general expressions
of commendation indicate.
"Cousin Jedcdiali," led by Messrs
Kohn, Salley, Wannamaker, Wolf'o
and sustained by a host of others,
furnished tho mirth of tho ovcuiug.
"Auhl Lang Syne" was good ?
Capt. M. Clover, the chief organer,
performed an important part.
The children were indispensable.,
Mr. Henry Kohn and ail engaged
deserve the highest commendation
for their success.
