Why Farming Does Wot Pay, We tec nil around us fanners wear ying long and gloomy laces, and hear the too oft-repeated remark : "The times uro hard, and farming docs not pay ." When farming is so managed that it v.ill not pay, no wonder that our country is in euch a lad condi tion and times are so hard. But how are they to bring about a change V "What can they do to innko farming more profitable? With the piesent management, they can do nothing ? na), worse than nothing. They must mnko n new start; for if ever ono set of people needed reformation, .is ii the farmers of the South. Ju the first place wo need more organization, as there is le?s of this among tho far mers than any other class of business men; we need more' farmer's clubs" all over our land and country , more social feelings, and the experience and advice of our neighbors, all of which tend to constitute unity, ami in unity there is bound to be strength. In the second place, we need farmers to make laws to govern fanners. It is and has been a blind thing in tho farmers, to send men to tho Legisla tive hnlls to make laws, who arc, in many cases, utterly care'e:s and ignorant of the wants and necessities of the farmer; who look upon fanning as a low calling, and would not design to soil their /air hands with honest labor upon the farm; who think itan honor not to know a plough from u hay-fctack; and in the "hiyhcr circles of society," boast of their petted ignorance. And agaiu, we cultivate too much cotton, and pay too little attention to raising corn, small grain and forage; are too dependent upon the North aud West for our supplies of bacon, flour, &c, besides feeding our slock on imported bay , when with far Ices expense we could raise its superior. Another groat drawback to the farmers, is the present system of labor. It is a settled fuel that as the produce of the farm decreases in value, so must labor; butitsoouij that the colored laborer wont under stand it, and reasons in this way : "If my work was worth 50 cents per day four years ago, why is it not worth as much now, as I can do tho s nine amount of labor I did then," but they must be made to see it in a di Here at light from tb" Tho fanners of this (Craven) country have been paying 60 cents per hundred for pickingcot ton; or giving as much to have it picked now, that is worth about eight cents per pound, as they did when ii was selling for 1? cents.?
