The Orangebnrg Times was estab lished in 1870, at a lone that tbe Republican party was at the zenith of its glory. During the stormy period of Re publican supremacy, when Demo cratic principled were unpopular, and running u Democratic paper was not ns smooth and cosy a task as it. is now that tbe enemy is routed :tud the victory won, it was edited successive Jy by James S. 1 Icy ward Esq., Capt. John A. Hamilton, Mr. Fowies, and the present editor In 1873 it was bought by Mr. G. NY. U'hitehead who continued to run it lor several years with marked success until (ail ing health, of which ho subsequently died compelled him to retire u I though financially s ico-jss ful. it was then sohl, and the Republi cans bi came the i urchnsers. From that time it was run without inlor misfuon by Republican money until . i.i,,r T_,,.,-1 o-o .. i.-,, ;< . . ?old to the preseut proprietors. ]Mi has now for the first time since Mr Whiteheads retirement resettled upon a genuine Dcntocrntic basis, and. if the patronage during the briel period of our'occupancy is any index of the future, it shall ever continue so. 'Jo this- end our energies are con fidcntly and encouragingly directed, and its lulGlmcnt depends upon the Democratic party from whom alone we expect support. The Eatlle Commenced. The debate in Congress on the 1st of April on the subject of the. Demo cratic appendages to the Appro priation nil*, requiring the removal of Supervisors ami the. Test Oath, was angry and exciting, assuming rather a sectional than a partisan tone. Mr. Chalmers of Mississippi was answering tien. Gat field's statement that the Scuta in 1^01 w as trying "to shoot the Union t') death " when Mr. Piiceoflova interrupted and asked "where was the first pun fired." to which Mr. Chalmers promptly ans wered that "the first gun was 11 red near Harpers Ferry where Southern blood was shed on Southern soil." Mr. Chalmers, hi the eoiirsd of his remarks said, that "the name of re-, o lution bad no terrors lor Democrats. It brings back to us that grand strug gle for ficcilcni when our revolution ary ancestors left their foot-prints stamped in il od in the snows ot Val ley torgc d'*c." At this point, Mr. Conger of Michi gan interrupting, asked "whether the second revolution of 1801 had any tenors for him." Mr. ( halmcrs responded that the "English Kings kepi jesters at their com i dressed in fools caps and be I is. but that the Republicans in Congress arrayed their jesters in swallow tails." Mr. Congei replied, "I asked the gentleman a civil qucstine ami in stead of answering he has jumped on his n tine box and makes grimaces to the country and to the House." Mr. Chalmers retorted; '?The gentleman is mistaken. 1 shall not undti tako to play a game at which any monkey can beat me.'' The de bate was further participated iu by both Republicans and Democrats until finally Mr. fluid of Ohio oh tabled the door and made a very EOOHbh and logical speech showing the uucoiistitutioiialily of the legisla tien enacted by (he Republicans winch the Di nine rats now iliteud to eliminate BiSMoliitlioii of {'opart II Ul'tfiliP .
