The <*? ntle Hovers? On last Friday two young and neatly appareled females made their appearance on our streets, aud visit ed almost every business place in quest of money. They carried a strong appeal for charity bearing upon it devices purporting to be symbols of masonry, and represent- j ing that they were burnt out in Aikeu and needed assistance. Those who were not deceived, and unwilling 10 appear iude, prying or ungallant to the gentler sex, acqui esced iu their moderate demands for cash, preferring "to entertain an angel unawares" than to inflict a wound that might be unjust. Under the operation of such feel ings a considerable amount of small change was collected, when Marshal Cannon, rising above the sentimen talities atllicting the rest of us, rushed upjn the scene, and after a short iu '.erview, escorted the gentle rovers before our City Council, to give an account of their stewardship. They were examined and found wanting, and ordered to leave the town on the first train.
