If the taxes were levied upon real and personal properly the valuation would be nearly if not quite doubled, and tbe rnto of taxation could bo re duced and more money collected. Our tow n has generally been in a pre dicament with the Fire Department. "When machinery &c. were tolerably good, Iho complaint was no wator; now we have o very good supply of water, and the complaints are no machinery, no men. It appears to us that the appropriation for svater sup ply should be one thing, and appro priations for repairs of the machinery of the Department another. So that one Department item will not swallow un the Department appropriations. A sum of not less than six hundred dollars should be appropriated an nually, say as follows : Fur repairs and improvements on engines one hundred dollars each, truck fifty dol lars, which would leave a balauco of 6'2f)0 to construct firo wells etc. The appropriations made for re-pairs an el improvement on apparatus and eng ines to be drawn i ne' paid on order of Board of Firetnasters This may not be necessary every year, and if not drawn, it remains in tbe Treasury to the credit oi this particular object of appropriation. This it appears to us would bejust and proper. Tbe Board of Firetnasters arc supposed to know the necessities of the Department and to be competent to s uggest repairs nnd improvement?, nnd'jthe appro priations will in this way make the Fire Department what it should be efficient, and an honor to the cun- : ttiunity. As long as the Department is subject to government by Couiici 1 (and this is as it should be)^it should be supported nnd protected by tin; public, ami the only way this can he done i? by taxation. Will our honorable Mayor aud Aldermen not take some steps towards making an impro\ cment in this impor tant Department of our town govern ment. Fi :i;max. A New Crusader. Lev. De La Matyr, the Green backer Congressman from Indiana, has started on a tiip South to make converts to the Greenback creed. His plan is to visit the Legislatures e>f the different Southern States, und. where he can, make speeches, and thus arouse an interest in his cau-e in order to give life to the Green back j>arty in-1880. We would say to the people of the South, whatever may be tbe merits of the Greenback doctrine, that the Democracy cannot afford to bo di vided now by any distracting ele ment. Our only hope in 1S80 lies in a united Democracy, and if Mr. De La Matyr gets any accessions to his cause from the South, lie weakens our hopes of victory. Let him pass by for the season, and come back at a time when there is not so much at stake. mm o mm ? ? Investigating Committees. Every time a Committee is appoin ted by Congress to investigate the South a big appropriation is made out of the peoples money to defray ex penses. Congressmen come down to New Orleans or Columbia, live ein the fat of the land, drink the finest wines, smoke the best cigars, and have a fine time pen orally at ihe ex pense of the people; then go bn.dt to Washington, and make a report for which thou amis have been spent, but which, outside of political pur poses, is not worth to the country as much as the paper upon which it is written, and thus the world wags on. How long shall the farce continue ? Congress.
